Vivitar 100-200mm Questions

I have a chance to pick up a Vivitar 100-200mm 1:4 K-mount lens (Circa 1978-198? I'm guessing) with a Vivitar 100-200mm 2X Matched Multiplier for under $50.

Is this a decent price if the lens is in good to excellant condition? Is the 2X Matched Multiplier usable on other lenses?

Not much more I could add than the review here: PentaxForums.com Third-Party Lens Review Database - Vivitar 100mm-200mm f4 macro (1:3/4) MC

It's main drawback is the limited focal length for a zoom. Not wide and not long. Honestly I wouldn't pay more than $50.00 IMO the Pentax A SMC 70-210 MF lens is a better purchase and not too much more.

Can't comment on the 2x as I haven't owned it, but that's going to make the VF pretty dim and f8 wide open. If you can I'd test the lens out first or offer the guy $35.00 for it if you can't. The market fo this is pretty limited IMO

I can't comment on the K-mount version as I only own the Canon FD-mount version.

Even taking into account the loss of an extra stop of light through the FD->K converter the viewfinder remains usable at f/4. As a two touch it is somewhat awkward to use, but it is immune to zoom-creep. The lens I have is marked Close Focusing rather than Macro. Its shortest focusing distance is 3 feet. The multiplier should work like any other 2x multiplier.

Thanks for the replys. I'm taking a look at it tonight along with a couple of other lenses. Maybe I can get a package deal.

The combination does seem to be a cheap way to get a 200-400mm range.

Just don't expect to use it in low light conditions. Focus wide open then stop it down and hit the green button.

That true. I expect to be using a monopod when I use this set-up.

Just had a look ...

and found out that it was a package deal. The package included the following for $80:

ME (not super) with Pentax M 50mm f1.7
Vivitar M 100-200mm f4
Vivitar M 100-200mm 2X matched multiplier
Vivitar M 28 f2 (K12)

The ME + M 50 go for about $50-$70 on Fleabay
The M 100-200 is worth $30
The M 100-200mm 2X matched multiplier is on Fleabay for $10 Buy It Now
The M 28 had oily blades

Thanks to RioRico for this post [https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-lens-articles/59245-pawnshop-lense...ers-guide.html] or I might have missed the oily blades. I decided to pass on the package.
