Is Pentax 200mm f/4 SMCP-FA ED (IF) Macro Lens legendary?

I saw this lens with one of my search on line at work and saw this lens!

Is this lens that great? Comparing to any of the current line up?

200mm f/4 SMCP-FA ED (IF) Macro Lens

Though this is expensive. I would like to justify myself for LBA

Comments welcome

Hi, your photo shows a 100mm f/4 macro?

I don't know about the 200mm one, but the 100mm f/4 one could be a 67 format lens. I remember Pentax released a 67 100mm f/4, while for 135 format lens, all their previous auto focusing 100mm macros have been max apature f2.8 ones...

I just remembered, at one time, they DID have a 135 format 100mm f/4 lens, but that's a rebranded tokina (or was it Tamron?) OEM lens and not as good as their own f2.8 offerings.

Looking at he price of that lens you linked it's defo not that cheap OEM one .

I'm still confused to why the photo shows a 100mm lens while the description says 200mm.

The A*200mm f4 and the FA*200mm f4 ARE legendary lenses. Possibly the sharpest of any of the Pentax lenses and that would have to be bloody sharp!!

The photo you have shown is of a 100mm f4 macro. I don't recognise it, so it could be for the 645 or 6x7.

CambridgeWorld as a source of information.

As far as I know, CambridgeWorld is a somewhat unreliable, if not shady(?) outfit. I would not depend on ANYTHING you see on their site.

Thanks for pointing out. It seems that is the case. I am getting no replies from the website and getting no information regarding items advertised.

Spooky actually.

I had to ring my credit companies so many times to check if my credit card had been abused - it has a limit that i could mortgage a house...

I really wished Australia can at least import a few lenses as there are so many of us in Australia loving pentax lenses.

THe FA* 200mm F4 macro was rated as the best macro of all 35mm telephoto macros (100mm+) when it came out, and held the tiele (as far as I know of) untill its discontuneance from production about 3-4years ago.
Untill recently (about 2yr ago) you could still find this new, and many other FA* lenses, but LBA has struck and you can hardely find them used, and for a good price.
good reposts from a few on it with digitals (6mp ones) if you want a fine macro-telephoto, this is the one to get. HOwever you will pay BIG $$$$ for it.
As for the company. I would not trust them, nor any co that reports FA* lenses still new and instock.

100 f/3.5

Looks to me like it's the FA 100mm f/3.5 Macro lens, one designed and made by Cosina for Pentax but containing "genuine Pentax electronics and SMC coating", either that or it's too late in the night and I've mistaken it for the 100/3.5.

Cheers,
-Asad

I think you are right, Asad.

That lens should look like this

I guessed I was so happy to see one on the net and left my whole cerebral cortex at my safe...

Hey, roentarre:

Looks like we both have good taste in lenses...

I did some more checking on CambridgeWorld, and got them (him?) to admit there is no actual store or even an office.

Did they put a charge through to your card, or did your company manage to block it?

Hi Tom. Yeah, We both have good taste in lenses with LBA - but not that motivated for rehabilitation though...hehe

I gave up contacting these people in cambridge world and just made sure I would not be charged for any further costs regarding any of the pre orders i had done through internet in that website.

Instead, I am just sticking to bhphoto.com now. At least the site is secured but there was no precious discontinued lenses available for sale there.

But i do have my A*300 f2.8 heading my way arriving my place probably on Tuesday. Already spent a fortune on LBA and eagerly waiting to try that heavy lens in the few weeks to come, building up my biceps and neck extensor muscles Good for weigjt training

Thanks for your inquisition. I wish you get your macro lens too and expecting to see more of your birding shots.

p.s. I am joining a birding photography tour in 2 weeks time to track down native birds here
