What B&H Teleconverters will support our lenses?

Greetings,

I think one of the broader questions here with teleconverters is what teleconverter does B&H carry that will give us the widest range of support on our lenses.

The biggest question is which ones will support SDM?
Which ones will support lenses from the big 3 (Pentax, Sigma, Tamron)?
Which ones will support non-sdm autofocus?
Which ones will correctly report aperture and focal length to our digital camera bodies?

If you can come up with a knock out answer, a tele that has good optical quality and answers the questions above favorably, I expect B&H will sell a lot of them.

Thanks!

Hello,

The best or ideal lens/camera body/teleconverter combo would be to use lenses that have teleconverters designed for them. Sigma teleconverters along with specific lenses would give you the best functionality.

You can view a list of recommended lens here;

Lens - Teleconverter Compatability Chart

Per Tamron, they have this Service Advisory on their site;

" When used on Digital SLR cameras: This teleconverter is not designed for digital use. We do not guarantee its performance when used on Digital SLR cameras. "

I have only one Sigma lens (the 50-500). I'm looking for something that will also work well with my FA* and DA* Pentax lenses.

Hello,

The only converter that may work is Kenko's 1.5X (their 2X for Pentax is no longer available).

This DG teleconverter has upgraded "Gate-Array IC" circuitry to work better with digital SLR's and some of the digital SLR lenses. This means that the converter's unique circuitry maintains signal integrity between the camera body and lens.

teleconverter for sigma 50-500

the tamron 1.4 and kenko 1.5 will work on the sigma 50-150. I use the teleconverters on my sigma 70-200 f2.8, pentax 55-300, sigma 50-500 and sigma 170-500.

If "work well" includes autofocus, I doubt if there is any TC that works well with the Sigma 50-500. At the long end, the lens itself is F/6.3 (there's no point using a TC with the zoom lens at the short end). With a 1.4X TC, that becomes F/8.8, not sufficient for autofocus sensor.

Also, IMHO, currently there is no TC that works well with SDM (or HSM). Even the combo Tamron 1.4X TC + DA* 50-135 has autofocus problem when the lens is at 135mm: it tends to hunt at lot.

Going by the chart supplied by Sigma a Sigma TC 1.4X will work on a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 HSM....since when?
