16-50mm/2.8 SMC lens..

It no longer auto-focuses.
I've tried it on both the K200D and K20D bodies. No change.
My other lenses work fine.
I think I've heard some rumblings about this lens 'suddenly' losing it's ability to focus.
It has not been dropped, dipped in water or chocolate for that matter.
Where should I start?
Thanks for your reply and for hosting this Board!!

Hello,

My immediate response was the lens was not communicating with your bodies. I would have the lens checked and the contacts on the lens mount cleaned to make sure they are making the proper connections to your cameras internal electronics.

You can check for an authorized Pentax Repair center here by clicking on the "REPAIRS" tab;

You may need to send it in to get the SDM motor replaced.

Check real quick to see if the AF/MF switch on the camera is switched to MF. This causes the lens to stop autofocusing. I did this by accident once and thought my lens was broken.

@chuck..

Thanks for the link. I'm in Rhode Island, so I would have to make a haul (but I'd rather make the trip to NYC anyway if I need to..)

However, if I were to try to clean the connections myself, what would be the best solution to use? Or do you not recommend this?

@Ureldaedalus..

Yep, went through all the AF/MF switches. I've had the bodies and lenses for over a year.

And like I said, my other lenses AF just fine. And I still get the octagon signal inside the camera to tell me I've locked focus.

And, yes, I've given myself that 'thought my lens was broken scare' as well.

If I need to get the motor replaced, I'm a little nervous about sending it away just now since I've got weddings booked soon. That being said, it works fine in manual focus. I'm just hoping this is not a prelude to a bigger problem around the immediate corner.

Sorry to hear that redmonarch. Since you have a wedding coming up, perhaps you can send your copy in to get fixed and then rent a DA*16-50 for the day of.

Here's one place I know of that offers Pentax lenses for rent. I used them to rent a DA* 200 for a wedding I did and everything went well:

Let's stop beating about the preverbial bush. This lens is NOTORIOUS for this, there are countless examples of it on both forums (DPR).

No surprise at all to see it yet again.

You won't get any argument from me that the DA*16-50 has a terrible history. I was just trying to help redmonarch fix her problem.

16-50 Pentax serial number data base thread

16-50 Pentax serial number data base thread needs your info.

Indeed the 16-50 is widely known for failures.

These persistent failures keep me from ever buying any SDM lens, be it new or used.

You can add your serial number and failure info in this thread:

Thank you for the camera lens rental recommendation. that's very exciting, becuase I can also rent a lens I just can't afford just yet. And they seem to have rave reviews.

I'd by happy to add my serial number to the database.

But my next question is - has anyone out there had the lens repaired by pentax and were happy with the work? Or is this lens doomed to be a lost cause?

My own 16-50 stopped working completely, no zooming no AF. The repair was about 30% of the original price of the lens and seems to be fine. I've got it repaired by our national Pentax authorized service center, which was extraordinarily slow, but at least successful.
