I have a Sigma 75-200mm, F/3.8 for Nikon AF. Will it work on a Pentax?

No, it won't. Nikon and Pentax use different lens mounts. So it is possible to somehow "mount" some old pre-AF Nikon lenses on the Pentax K-mount, this would loose all mechnical and electric connections. And the current Af lenses will be useless, if the can be force-fitted at all.

Hello,

No, I am sorry this will not work. Many customers including myself are interested in adapting one brand of lens to another manufacturers body. I have several Contax lens that I would love to use on a body with built in Image Stabilization. The last time our Pentax rep was here, I asked about using these lens adapters, especially a universal screw mount type lens (Pentax M42) to be mounted on a Pentax K-mount type body ( I did not want to mention Contax ). The problem is current DSLR bodies look for an electronic hand shake so the body knows a lens is mounted. Our rep said that although a lens can be mounted, the IS would not work. Many Sony Alpha customers have reported that when using these types of adapters, their cameras would not fire at all. I often advise customers that unless you have a very unique lens, with regards to DSLR's, it is better to use a lens designed to work on your camera as opposed to attempting to adapt one on.

Here are some 70-300's we currently have in the Pentax lens mount.

Chuck, though generally speaking you are right about the non-adaptabilty, you are very wrong about M42 screwmount lenses and the Pentax Shake Reduction.

Pentax SR works nicely with adapted lenses, as you can dial in the focal length manually.

Chuck, I've shot with Contax (RTS) lenses on my K20D with pretty good success since they are non-AF lenses and the "flange to film" distance is nearly identical to Pentax K-mount. Here is an example from a C/Y Zeiss 50mm f/1.7 that I adapted with a Leitax mount kit. Manual aperture control sometimes requires modification on AE Contax lenses, but the SR works very well no matter what lens you put on the front... if you can mount it correctly!

Also, unlike Nikon and Canon (and Sony?), Pentax doesn't require a chip or special adapter to "recognize" the lens, only that (for non-automatic aperture control lenses) a Custom Function be set to "Allow Aperture Ring = Permitted" (once for the body) so it will meter and fire based on the current aperture even if it can't read or control it. All old Pentax M42 lenses function like this, and so do adapted Contax and Leica lenses!

So, AF Nikon (or really any other non-Pentax mount AF lens) = no good, but pre-AIS Nikkor with aperture ring = possible, if you can get the lens to fit on your Pentax DSLR

And if you can get the lens to fit on your Pentax DSLR (M42 adapter, Leitax adapter, electrical tape) you will get:
1) Shake Reduction based on (user input) focal length
2) AF confirmation based on phase detection for f/8 and lower(!)
3) "Green Button" stop-down metering for non-A (M42, etc.) lenses.
Your EXIF won't show the aperture, but it will show whatever focal length you entered when prompted by the camera at startup!

One of my favorite lenses is a 1970's Russian 58mm f/2 Helios-44 in M42 mount! It's stabilized and has AF confirmation on my Pentax, and it's built to survive a nuclear blast!

Nice lens. I have it in Pentax. Although the lens is a constant f3.8, it is f4 on the digital Pentax bodies. For awhile you could pick one up on ebay every few months for under $100, sometimes under $50. I haven't seen any for Pentax in awhile, but if you do find one, it definitely is nice to have a f4, 75-200mm, in such a small package. At least small compared to the DA 60-250mm.

Thank you
Russell

Chuck, you should go back to that Pentax rep and tell him to look at Pentax's own advertising. One of the things that they emphasize in their advertising is that all Pentax dlsrs will work with ANY PENTAX 35mm LENS EVER MADE.

I love using my Super Takumar 50mm, f/1.4 from my old Spotmatic on my K10D. It works just fine, including the SR function.

I'd be worried if the Pentax rep didn't know this.

Hey Chuck!

Transform your Contax lenses to K-mount, I would like to see some sample photos!

Dunno if they are compatible with the adapters though.
