Generally one lens will not do everything well. You might get by with a 16-50 and the 60-250, which are both excellent (though with possible SDM motor issues), but there are other types of photography, such as macro, that might require a specialized lens for best results.

There are a lot of choices, and many people will recommend specific lenses or series of lenses (such as the Limited primes) that cost over $1,000. Some people are happy with manual focus screw-mount lenses that can be had for under $100.

For a general purpose lens you might go with a 17-70. It is wide and long enough to cover the basics in one lens. The Pentax 55-300 is a qood-quality zoom at a reasonable price ($350). The 10-17 fisheye is really wide and give the distortion some people like and others don't.

Your use of lenses may change over time, and you can always sell the them to minimize your losses, so I would not get too hung up over them - yet.

Hello;

For most family shooting with price not being a concern, the Pentax SMCP-DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED AL (IF) SDM Lens would be a great choice.This would more than likely handle 75% of your shooting. The use of prime lenses does have it's advantages but when following my son around, there is not always time to switch lens. I have found myself many times with the wrong lens on my camera with no time tio change lens. Pairing the 16-50mm lens with the 60-250mm f/4 ED (IF) SDM Autofocus Lens would be an ideal combination.
