Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-f/5.6 DC HSM

I notice this lens lacks the EX designation Sigma puts on its best, most-rugged, lenses. I don't know if that's a problem or not. But there are a lot of Pentaxians who stay away from non-EX Sigma lenses because of perceived issues with quality control and longevity. Please discuss the Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-f/5.6 DC HSM's material and build quality - particularly when compared with both of Sigma's 10-20mm zooms, which do carry the EX designation.

My impression from this forum and others is that the #1 Sigma lens with regard to quality control complaints is the 10-20mm 4-5.6 EX, so I don't think the EX designation has any relationship to quality control. I'd guess it's more a matter of marketing a certain combination of features in a certain way.

The 8-16mm may be too new for anyone to know if it will be plagued by the well-known 10-20mm quality control issues.

A better question might be: what is the best and most cost-effective way for me as a consumer to assure that I personally don't wind up with a poor-performing 8-16mm? Even if only 1 in 1000 8-16mm lenses turns out to have a problem, that's too many if that one happens to be yours.

Hello,

According to Sigma;

EX (EX Lens)
The exterior of this lens is EX-finished to denote the superior build and optical quality, and to enhance its appearance.

I called Sigma and they said generally speaking, EX lens refer to fixed aperture lens. There are of course exceptions like the 2 10-20mm lens.

We've heard no negative comments from customers.
