Sigma 70-200mm HSM II & More

Has the Sigma 70-200 HSM II lens been discontinued for Pentax?

I ask because I am looking for a new portrait zoom. My Pentax 50-135 lens is acting strange so it's not going to be in my 5 for much longer. I'm looking also at the Sigma 50-150 HSM lens for Pentax.

How does the Sigma 50-150 compare to the Pentax 50-135 in terms of AF speed and weight?

And how does the new Sigma 70-200 HSM II OS lens compare to the previous Sigma 70-200 in regards to weight? Is it at B&H yet?

Also, do you have quick standing light stands?

In February 2010, Sigma did announce a new version of the 70-200 f2.8 lens. The new lens is currently not available with no expected delivery date.

According to their Press Release;

February 21, 2010: The Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the new Sigma APO 70-200 F2.8 EX DG OS HSM.This large aperture telephoto zoom lens incorporates Sigma’s original Optical Stabilizer function.

The lens covers a medium telephoto range of focal lengths from 70mm to 200mm and has a large maximum aperture of F2.8 throughout the entire zoom range. The OS (Optical Stabilizer) function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. For Sony and Pentax mount, the built-in OS function of this lens can be used even if the camera body is equipped with an image sensor shift anti-shake system.

For more information;

The Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 II EX DC HSM Lens for Pentax weighs 1.7 lb (780g), the Pentax 50-135mm f/2.8 ED (IF) SDM Autofocus Lens 1.5 lb (685 g) [w/o hood]. Both lens have built in Sonic Motors for focusing and would perform equally as good as the other.

The Matthews Reverse Stand is best suited for location work, since it can fold back on itself into a very compact package only 22.75" (58 cm) long. It has four risers, and its maximum height is 83.5" (2.1 m).

70-200 hsm ii

I was in the store last week and was asking about this lense, the HSM II version, because I planned to buy it that day. The salesman made several calls for me. I think his last call was to a Sigma rep. After his calls he told me that the new OS version was not selling like they hoped and that they are starting up production on the HSM II version once again and it should be available next month.

I logged on today to ask a question based on something else though. I was going to purchase the HSM II from Sigma because they have teleconverters that work with the lense and I could get additional reach when I need it. Now I see that the teleconverter does not work with a Pentax mount and the HSM II.

So now for the question; I would like to purchase the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 instead of the Sigma because I need it here real quick (and it's for my birthday ) and I want to know if there is a good teleconverter that would work with this lense and my K20D.

Thanks

Hello,

Other than the Sigma's which are not recommended for the Tamron lens, we tested this converter on a Pentax 200mm f2.8 lens and it would not AF.
