When do you expect to have the 645D?

I've been waiting for years. It is being manufactured. It is being sold in other countries. When do you expect to have it in your stores? Even an educated guess would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello,

At this time, we have no information on when the 645D will become available in the USA. As soon as we know, we will post it on our web site.

I'm not looking for certainty. I'm looking for an educated guess from someone who knows the photographic community, who knows the Pentax company, who knows how things like this work. Even an educated guess as to whether the 645D will be sold in the U.S. at all would be appreciated. I know, with absolute certainty, that this information will be on your website as soon as you know for sure. I don't want to wait that long, and I'm willing to settle for an educated guess rather than absolute certainty. Realizing that no one is going to hold you to it, won't you just offer your own educated opinion regarding my question? Thanks.

Hello,

My "educated guess" based on my 12 years here at B&H is we do not know. Pentax USA has not given us any indication on when or if they will make the camera available here.

When speaking to a customer, I never guess. I inform you what I believe to be the best most accurate information I have at my disposal.

Chuck is correct on all counts. We do not guess, educated or otherwise, and we steadfastly refuse to feed the rumor beast.

Here's what we've been told by Pentax USA. At this time there are no plans at all for them to bring the Pentax 645 digicam system into the USA. The issue for them, as I understand it, is not simply writing a purchase order for a batch of bodies, lenses and related accessories. They'd need to establish new warranty service options which would require special training, new equipment and additional repair parts inventories. They'd need to train all their sales and tech reps and those reps in turn would have to spread out throughout the USA training sales and support people in all their authorized retailers. They'd have additional expenses for advertising, marketing and so on.

It's worth noting the current press release on dpreview is dated March 2010, but if you wander back in time, you'll find another dated March 2005. Not much came of that announcement either, as far as I can recall.

So, the short answer, absent diplomacy is, "Not anytime soon." If I had to guess, based on their past performance, I'd say probably never and certainly not during 2010.

O.k., thanks very much. I understand your not wanting to feed a rumor mill, and for my part, I know the difference between a fact and an opinion. I'm not a corporate executive, just a lowly consumer, so I think in simple terms such as "if they can do all that Henry described in Japan and other countries, why not the U.S.? Also from my limited perspective, I think there would be a huge demand for a camera like the 645D I've seen described. Finally, new cameras are being developed and distributed all the time all over the world; I can't see why the 645D would be such a special case that the company would decide to keep that particular one out of a country that would provide a significant market share. Of course, I have a prejudiced view: I've been waiting for 5 years for this camera. Judging by the run on Pentax 645 lenses all over the country, I know a lot of other people feel as I do. Anyway, thanks for you insider views -- I know what the official line is, and I know yours are just two educated guesses from two individuals. Bottom line is that I don't know when or if Pentax will distribute the 645D in the U.S., and I'll probably decide to buy Christmas presents instead of saving for this camera.

As far as I know the 645 system is now only available in Japan, so there aren't "other countries" to contend with. And, since each country's individual authorized Pentax distributor has to shoulder it's own expenses I presume distributors make this decision individually. This is speculation on my part.

It's my OPINION demand would be quite limited. The camera would be substantially larger and heavier than a digicam with a 35mm form factor and substantially more expensive to boot.

The Hasselblad H4D-40 body weighs 5+lbs and costs $18,000. Now I know that's for 40 megapixels, but with top pros shooting the 24.5 megapixel Nikon D3x ($7400.00 and 2.7 lbs) and 21.1 Megapixel EOS-1Ds Mark III (2.67lbs and $6100.00) I'm not confident demand would make this an effective investment on Pentax USA's part. This too is speculation on my part.

Thank you. I want to clarify. While this post includes speculation on my part, my earlier post reported information provided to me and a colleague by friends within Pentax USA and was not an "educated guess."

Henry,

I work in hospice care. I take people who bite, scratch, hit and throw things (and some quite good insults) at me and take care of them like they are the most precious thing God has ever put onto this planet in their time of suffering and need.

And I believe you have more patience than I do. You know. Just saying.

From postings I've read, I was under the impression that the 645D is being sold in Australia. In any event, I know that has no bearing on the U.S. market. And I'll second what TiJean has said: I've seen great patience on Henry's part, and I'm very glad that a B&H representative participates in this and other online forums. Thanks.
