The Tamron 1.4x Pz-AF teleconverter will give you AF on the DA*300 (SDM). I've used the combo in the past and got pretty decent results with it. It is no longer produced, so you'd have to find a used copy. Here's a link you might want to check out.

tom1803, who posted on this forum, had a supply of Kenko 1.5 converters Pz-AF 1.5 teleplus SHQ, sourced in Japan, which have the extra contacts to permit SDM focusing. The price was around £100. I purchased one and it certainly works with my 300 DA* lens. It appears to have comparable quality to the normal Kenko 1.5 converter. Focus with the 300 is a little slow and hunts especially if the light levels are low. Also, the depth of field is pretty small! Don't know whether there are any left!

It looks like Pentax has just fired up the Vietnamese production line for the 1.7 teleconverter. Mine came yesterday ! I had to order it from a Japanese camera equipment store, or I'd have all kinds of duck pictures ( migration season in the California Bay Area ) to show you what can be done. I got mine through Japan Exposures. If you go that route, contact them first to make sure they can get more. Mine was in the 2nd batch that Japan Exposures got.

I've found that the Pentax AF 1.7x & 2x-S TCs match up very well with the DA*300mm. I've been quite pleased with the results.

How does AF work with the Pentax 1.7? Do you manually focus first, to get within the TC' range?

I use the SMC Pentax -F 1.7X AF adapter on my SMC 60-250* with absolutely stunning results, and I mean stunning. Bought it on one of my frequent visits to Tokyo for some $250 US. But they are hard to find even in Japan. I had to specially order mine. AF is fast an accurate on my K7 but you need to get into a near enough focus range before the adapter takes over. No problem with the 60-250 it has a clutched manual focus ring.
