KR Flash Compatibility Question

I have a old but good SAKAR 370ZX flash I used with my old MX and Super Program film camera's that has a tilt head. I want to be sure it is safe to use with my new KR. The manual says it is compatable with an Pentax MV-1, MG and LX film camera's so I assume so but want to be safe. I want to take advantage of the tilting head for portrait shots plus it has a 4 head setting for wide to telephoto lenses. If so, if the head on swiveled as well as tilted it be perfect bcause of its small size.

Hello,

There are 2 issues;

1) If the trigger voltage is higher than what the cameras hot shoe can take, you can damage the camera. I have no way of knowing what the sync voltage of the flash is.

2) I doupt if the flash supports pre flash, so TTL is more than likely not possible.

My experience has been using legacy flashes from film cameras is usually not worth the effort and current models designed to be used on DLSR's is the best option.

I'm not sure why this is a question for B&H.

I have no doubt about Chuck's knowledge. But my point is that this is a general question that is better posted in another forum.

Back to the OP's question: from what I know, the SAKAR 370ZX has TTL, auto, and manual mode. TTL is useless for your K-r, but auto mode can be useful.

Please read this thread. It is about Sunpak flashes but many points discussed there can also be applied to your flash unit.

Thanks to both of you for your response. I was aware that the 370ZX could do TTL which of course is useless being as my KR doesn't do TTL. What Chuck warned about was exactly my concern. Before I try to use it I will have to check what the voltage is.

Chuck, can you recommend and after market flash that B&H carries that swivels and tilts and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I am retired and on a budget which is the only reason I even unpacked some of my old film day accessories.

Hello:

he EF-530 Super DG is Sigma's flagship TTL flash, and has been updated with improved coverage range and a stronger power output. It features a powerful Guide Number of 174'/53 m at 105mm, and covers a focal range from 24mm to 105mm. The EF-530 Super DG is also fully compatible with the latest digital SLR cameras that use a pre-flash, and supports full P-TTL operation (where supported by camera). You will find features designed for the professional, at a much more attractive price than the comparably equipped manufacturer's flashes. The perfect all-around flash for any digital or 35mm autofocus SLR shooter.

The Vivitar DF-283 Shoe Mount Flash is a fully automatic, system-dedicated shoe mount flash, featuring full TTL flash support for digital SLR cameras such as the Pentax line. Although it is an economical and simple to use flash, it still provides some extra features like bounce & swivel, and a manual zoom head and outputs a substantial amount of light.
