Warranty query

The one thing that's making me hesitate about buying a new lens from B&H and having it shipped to the UK is my uncertainty about what happens if the lens is faulty...

i) Would the warranty make it possible for the lens to be repaired / exchanged right here in the UK (by Pentax UK) ... or would it be necessary to ship it all the way back to the US, and pay for it to be shipped back again?

ii) I don't suppose you can check lenses before they are dispatched? My concern is about buying a decentred lens!

Thanks Chuck, terrific idea having a Q&A section!

I don't know about the warranty thing, but remember you're likely to have to pay duty and VAT on it before the post office will let you have it (plus an admin fee for the privilege of paying duty and vat). There's some chance it won't be held, but when you're budgeting assume it will.

Yep, B&H rather brilliantly has a shipping/VAT/import tax calculator and displays the total in GBP as part of the checkout process. Thankyou, B&H, for making it easy!

...and even after all that, it's still significantly cheaper than the UK price. Thankyou, weak dollar!

Fair enough!

(I did discover recently that for camera bodies you have to send them back to the country of purchase unless you've obtained an 'international warranty card' which you'd request after buying the thing. Might well be different for lenses though.)

Hello,

Sorry, we cannot check equipment before shipping.

Officially; For product sold out side the United States, please check with the manufacturer locally, to see if they will honor the USA warranty. This is entirely up to the discretion of the manufacture in question and out of the control of B&H.

All "USA" warranted items may be repaired in any manufacturer's authorized service facility world-wide if the item required in-warranty service. B&H can not stamp warranty cards as "international" nor offer a world wide option.

The "Direct Import" or Grey Market item would have to be returned to B&H Photo-Video Corp. in New York City if it required in-warranty attention.

B&H now offers SageMax Protection Plans which will cover qualifying products worldwide. An items corresponding plan will be listed on its product page on our site.

The SageMax Protection Plans main advantage over extending the manufacturers warranty is coverage for ADH or (Accidental Damage and Handling), normal wear & tear and failure due to environmental factors.

According to Pentax
Digital Cameras and Accessories - Official PENTAX Imaging Web Site

International Warranty Card
New PENTAX products do not automatically come with an international warranty that covers all PENTAX products around the world. However, it is possible to obtain an International Warranty Card through PENTAX Imaging Company after you have purchased a PENTAX product. If you bought your PENTAX product in the United States and are traveling to a foreign country for an extended period of time, we can send you an International Warranty Card to cover your product while you are abroad. We will also send you a list of authorized service centers around the world.

To obtain an International Warranty Card, please send the below-listed items to PENTAX Imaging Company, 600 12th Street, Suite 300, Golden, CO 80401:
A copy of your dated proof of purchase, with the name and address of the U.S. dealer.
The serial number on your PENTAX product (if it has one).

Thanks Chuck. It really is great having a B&H rep on this forum!

Hopefully Pentax UK can confirm whether they honour the USA warranty, it certainly looks like I can apply for an International Warranty in this country.

I presume the item isn't 'grey' - it's not described as such on the website! (It's the DA15mm).

Looks like the SageMax plan would also require me shipping the item back and forth to the USA if it needed repairing, can't see whether they would cover the cost of that...

Hi

I have purchased a Pentax lens with USA warranty from B&H Photo. My inquiry is whether the USA warranty is transferrable or valid within the UK.

Many thanks

Hello,

Our Pentax gear is USA. Any item if Grey Market is labeled as such.

The way Sagemax usually works is you would take your camera to Pentax locally and get a price quote. If they approve the amount, they would send you a check for the repair and only local shipping ( if you are not near the repair shop ) would be needed.

Chuck
