New K-5 Inventory...

Hi.... I see you have received new K-5 inventory..... have you had any communication with Pentax as to determine whether the new stock you've received is without the stain defect?
From what has been discussed here, it seems the newest production date K-5 bodies may be free of the 'curse of the sensor stain'.
As one who will buy a K-5 in the very near future, I need to be apprised of this very important information as to avoid the 'buy and return' scenario many others have had to encounter.
Thanks for your consideration, Regards, Dave M.

Hello,

No, I am sorry. They have not informed us if the current inventory is free from the stain issue.

They are aware of it and I would have to image that they are putting procedures in place to make sure no more cameras are not shipped to dealers needing a repair.

Sorry I do not have any more insight.

Because Pentax has publicly stated that they are aware of the stain problem and have corrected the production process, perhaps they would not have sent them at all if they had stains on the sensor.

I ordered a K-5 body from B&H on Wednesday, Jan 26. It arrived new and factory fresh (Manf date: 14-Jan-11, shutter count = 0) on Friday, Jan 28. I paired it to a DFA 100/2.8 MACRO WR, upgraded to FW 1.02, and immediately put it through the classic stains test described here and elsewhere. Result = clean sensor (NO PROBLEM). I also shot some typical tungsten lit subjects at f/2.8 using AF in low light settings that were much darker than usual for me, but NOT so dark the AF assist light came on. Result = focus seems spot on, works great (NO PROBLEM). So for me, I'm putting the sensor stain and AF FF/BF issues out of my mind and am looking forward to some photographic fun... Appears to be a neat tough camera body just like the tons of reviews suggest...

Cheers... M

Hello,

I do not like posting publicly that I do not know nor cannot find out information for a customer, so I nudged our Pentax Rep;

Hi, Chuck:

It’s actually moisture that became wedged inside the sensor. It affected a very small batch (less than 1%) of our original production and has since been fixed.
Any customer with this issue will be replaced with a new K-5. Have them return to B&H and we will gladly issue a RA for the defective unit.

Our apologies for the inconvenience.

Thank you.

Chuck
