Teleconverter (TC) for a Pentax 55-300 lens

"Bonjour" and Hello,

I'm a former Oklahoman living in France and I would like to purchase a TC for a 55-300mm Pentax lens. The selection here in Poitiers is non-existant (we're about half way between Paris and Bordeaux) and the rest of France isn't too great either.

I would considered either a 1.4x TC and/or a 2x TC. Could you please advise concerning both TC's?

We will be coming to the states for the holidays, thus I will ask that the TC(s) be sent to a family address in OK.

Thanks for your help (merci), John

This question gets posted every couple of weeks it seems and the answer is always the same. You will get better shots by just cropping the 55-300 instead of using a TC. AS much as we all admire the 55-300 for its value, it does not have the IQ or speed to work well with a TC. That said, using a Pentax AF 1.7x will preserve some autofocus as well as extending the range enough to make a difference. But don't plan on counting feathers due to the level of detail you will lose. But it will work.

Yes, I have a 55-300 and have tried it with 1.4, 1.7 and 2x TCs.

Just so there is something to look at, I just took some shots at birding kind of range, tripod, k20D, mirror lockup, default jpg settings with no post process. Here is the lens at 300 (shown at 125% sizing) compared to 300 plus Pentax AF 1.7x TC (shown at 75% sizing). Just the center portion.
As you can see, the TC shot lost contrast and gained a lot of PF. Hard for me to tell a whole lot about sharpness at this size and without some processing to restore contrast.

Bonjour Lee et merci ...

Thanks for the advice and the photos ... My wife (French) wants to shoot birds and post to a local bird protection association ("LPO Vienne" - Ligue pour la Protection des Oisieaux - vienne.lpo.fr) so that's the why for the TC question. She's now got the Kr with the 55-300 and maybe we'll play with a TC later on ... Thanks again (merci encore), and as the French say "à bientôt". John
