Best camera/lens for photographing negatives

I'm considering purchasing a DSLR pentax (to replace my antique ME Super). I'm interested to know if anyone can recommend a camera and, more importantly, the right lens for photographing negatives.

I have a box full of old black and white negatives, many the old 120 format (nearly 3" by 5"), that I'd like to photograph. (I'd then invert the images and print them.) Yes, I know that scanners might be better quality, but the speed of a camera would offset the loss in quality.

I'm thinking a lens that could focus sharply on a flat surface 2 to 3 feet away would be what I want.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Any macro lens should work (such as a 50mm)- but even a flatbed should be able to match the quality.

Hello,

Unless you just want to have files for posting on the internet, a scanner will be all around a better option. You will get much better resolution and detail, more even lighting and sharpness due to the glass plate and holders that you will secure your neg's into when scanning. I would not use a DSLR for this purpose.

The Epson Perfection V500 Photo Flatbed Scanner offers extraordinary quality and versatility with an impressive 6400 dpi resolution and an earth-friendly energy-efficient LED light source for greater productivity and lower power consumption with no warmup time. The scanner is also equipped with Digital ICE technology to Remove dust and scratches from slides, negatives and film, or restore faded color photos with one touch. Then, you'll be able to take your photos further with the included Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 software. It's all at your fingertips with this powerful scanner.
