Vivitar-383-PEN flash and K-5

I purchased both the Vivitar-383-PEN and K-5 from B&H. The Vivitar-383-PEN will not work on the K-5, it starts flashing like a high speed strobe light when the K-5 is turned on. I have checked around this forum and it seems that some 3rd party flashes don't work on the K-5 but work fine on earlier Pentax DSLR cameras. I have tried the vivitar on a K20d and found that it works fine. Is the problem with the flash or the camera? The camera is still within the 30 day return period but the flash is not. What do you recommend?

Hello,

Customers often ask me what the differences are between manufacturers flashes and after market versions. Your experience is the answer. A flash must communicate with a camera body via software. Flash manufacturers have 2 options, pay a licensing fee to the camera manufacturer ( like Metz ) or develop work a-rounds. With every new camera model comes newer technologies, so it is quite possible that your particular flash may have been manufactured ( or designed ) prior to the K5. Just my hunch. For 100% flash operation, I always recommend a manufactures flashes or Metz. I personally have had good results with Sigma brand flashes.

B & h - great customer service

I called B&H photo and explained the Vivitar DF-383-PEN flash - K-5 problem. They looked into their data base of reasons for K-5s being returned and found nobody had returned one for this problem. They agreed with the Vivitar representative I spoke with, that it was a problem was with the K-5. They told me to return it for a replacement, which I did today. I must say, B&H were cheerful, helpful and very pleasant to deal with, I am glad I bought the K-5 from them.

K5 + Vivitar flash

I got my replacement K5 from B&H, I also bought a Metz 50 AF1 flash as I sold my Vivitar 383. I am pleased to announce that the K5 and Metz perform perfectly together. Thank you B&H.
