optical viewfinder shade

Pentax recommends blocking the optical viewfinder when not using it to prevent stray backlights from affecting exposure. My Pentax Super Program came with a simple (cheap) plastic shade that did just this. Is something comparable available for the K-r?

The K-r comes with it in the box, I believe.

You have the correct gizmo Adam, but no it is not included with the K-r. What you get is a cushioned eyepiece that is removeable (and a pain to reinstall). Under that is the traditional optical viewfinder that will work with the same ME viewfinder cap. Now that I have the correct name, Google tells me that Adorama sells this $0.03 piece of plastic for "only" $8.95. Ouch.

I've managed to not lose mine from my Super Program by drilling two small holes and sewing it like a button to the inside of my Super Program's camera strap.

Given the relative difficulting of removing and reinstalling the cushioned viewfinder eyepiece on the K-r (and I like the cushion),and the ridiculous price for the official viewfinder cap, I think I'm going to have to invent some kind of cover that fits over the cushion.

Indeed, you need to remove the cushioned cover to put the cap on- are you sure the $0.03 piece of plastic isn't somewhere in the box, though? It's always come with the camera's I've bought (DS2, K10D, K20D, K-7, K-5).

I took EVERYTHING out of the box, including all the cardboard inserts and unfolded them. No viewfinder cap, nor is one mentioned in the contents - and the contents even mentions the hot shoe cover (the viewfinder cap would have been much more useful and takes only a teeny more plastic to create). I guess Pentax didn't really expect users to put the camera on a tripod and use the self-timer for that ubiquitous outdoor family reunion shot; but those hot shoe contacts must be really sensitive.

Hello,

I just received an E-Mail back from Pentax:

"Yes, the Finder Cap ME will work on the K-r but is not included with the camera. Short exposures or exposures made when the eye is at the viewfinder are typically are not affected significantly by light entering the viewfinder. When using the camera on a tripod in Bulb exposure mode I will cover the viewfinder with my hand. If the customer would like to use the Finder Cap ME."
