Field Tablet Recommendation

I'm looking for a tablet that I can take to a photo shoot. I want to be able to pull my SD card out of the camera, put the card into the tablet, and instantly view the photos. (I realize this is a tougher challenge for RAW, but let's leave the RAW issue out of the conversation for now and assume JPG.)

I have combed through the B&H tablet filters a hundred times, and there are very few tablets with full-size SD slots. That wouldn't matter to me if could plug a card reader into the tablet's usb port and know that I could instantly view the photos. I don't want to have to transfer the photos to the tablet first. I want to be able to view them right off the card.

I have read in these forums about the Eye-Fi cards, but I don't think the read/write speed on those cards are high enough for continuous shooting.

I prefer the following features too, but I can compromise on those:
  • Prefer a slate-style table
  • Prefer Android
  • Prefer 7 inch, but 10 is ok
  • Prefer at least 16GB capacity
  • Prefer wi-fi and bluetooth (don't care about 3g/4g)
  • Must have front-facing camera, but don't care about rear camera

Any help is appreciated ... thanks.

Hello,

I believe you sent us an E-Mail. I will post our response here in case others are also interested.

Unfortunately, we don't have a solution that meets all of your preferences. One solution would be the iPad Mini. That combined with the Lightning to SD card adapter will let you view, and import your photos, including most RAW formats.

We don't currently have any Android tablets with a full sized SD card reader, however we do have a few running Windows, none with a 7” display. With a 10” display the Asus VivoTab Smart would be able to view and import without a problem.

I also wouldn't discount the EyeFi cards. They have a new card with faster speeds. The new cards are Class 10, and have a write speed of up to 22MB/s. You will be able to use it with the iPad, Android, Windows, and Mac OS.

The above solutions may not be exactly what you were looking for, however all three will accomplish your task. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reply.

James

I hope this helped.
