Tablet Question Clarification

I was reading a response to a forum member's question about tablets, and I'd like to ask a follow-up.

charlestm wrote, "That wouldn't matter to me if could plug a card reader into the tablet's usb port and know that I could instantly view the photos. I don't want to have to transfer the photos to the tablet first. I want to be able to view them right off the card."

chuck-B&H replied, "We don't currently have any Android tablets with a full sized SD card reader, however we do have a few running Windows, none with a 7 display. With a 10 display the Asus VivoTab Smart would be able to view and import without a problem."

Based on my own internet research, I've yet to find a solution (atleast based on my understanding of tablets, and especially with Apple products) to the question he posed about being able to VIEW Raw files on the tablet WITHOUT downloading them to the tablet's internal memory. Reading raw files also seems to be major issue, and being forced to download them is the other problem. I dont want to be transferring files back and forth in the field!

The other "wish" is the ability to delete failes directly from the SD card after viewing, such that if on a field trip and running low on memory one could scavenge some space be deleting unwanted images.

Have things changed in the last year, giving photographers better options in tablets now (especially i-thingys since my gf really wants one)? Because if that's the case, I could finally justify the outlay of money for one. Often a 10" screen could be the difference between doing a reshoot right there in the field, or getting home and realizing that at full size the image is worthless.

Hello;

RAW files like food are uncooked or processed. The reason a tablet cannot show the file is to the tablet there is nothing to show. The data is not formatted and therefore does not know what to do with it. With video AVCHD files, if supporting software is not installed, a computer will not even see the memory card the files are on.

RAW files are proprietary meaning only Pentax software can understand and process a Pentax RAW file. Manufacturers make plug ins available for programs like Lightroom for Post Processing.

On its own, I am not aware of any APP that can run on a tablet and display RAW files.
