Sigma 1.4 Teleconvertor Availability

I want to do bird photography and I want to do this with the Pentax Kll and the Sigma 2.8 300mm lens and it will be necessary to have the Sigma 1.4 Teleconvertor to get the necessary reach while still having a lens that can be used without a tripod. Has the 1.4 teleconvertor been discontinued?? If so there is no other quality fast telephoto option for the Pentax in 300mm. Are Pentax owners being closed out of fast telephoto photography? Can I find the 1.4 somewhere? Is Sigma dumoing Pentax??

Thanks, Bob

Hello,

The Sigma APO Teleconverter 1.4x EX DG for Pentax has sadly been discontinued and was the best option for Sigma lenses. The only 1.4X option is from Vivitar.

Vivitar's 1.4x Teleconverter for Pentax adds another valuable tool to your camera bag, at a very affordable price. This compact and lightweight 1.4x teleconverter multiplies the focal length of any compatible lens by 1.4--a 100mm lens with this teleconverter attached, for instance, would give you the view of a 140mm lens. The multi-coating on the converter reduces flare and ghosting, common problems with digital cameras. And, the minimum focusing distance is unchanged. This teleconverter comes with a lifetime warranty.

I might suggest getting Sigma's 2X while available. The Sigma 2x EX DG APO Tele Converter (also known as a tele-extender) will multiply the focal length of the existing lens by 2x, and will cut back the amount of light by 2 f/stops. For example, using a 2x teleconverter with a 300mm lens will effectively increase the focal length to 600mm. A lens set to f/2.8 will now be f/5.6.

Sigma 1.4 Teleconvertor

That is sad news indeed. Sigma is the only fast 300mm lens available for Pentax cameras and the combination with the 1.4 Sigma Teleconvertor probably provides the best image quality available for Pentax in that focal length. I'm afraid that for people who want to do sports and bird photography Pentax is not going to be an option. I'll see if I can find a good used Sigma 1.4 teleconvertor before I make the investment in the Sigma 300mm. Or sadly I may have to end the 40+ year relationship with Pentax and switch to the new Nikon and still get the Sigma lens set up. Either way I'll be doing my business with B&H....

Best regards, Bob
