2nd owner warranties?

I've seen several ads lately for cameras being sold saying they have the original sales receipt, so the warranty would be applicable for the second-hand buyer. Am I correct in being hesitant, as I thought the warranties applied to original owners only?

Hello,

Generally speaking, a manufacturers warranty is not transferable to a second owner. The only except is when an item is given as a gift and this would be handled at the time of registration. Pentax's web site states: " are warranted by RICOH IMAGING AMERICAS CORPORATION and RICOH IMAGING CANADA to the original retail purchaser for a period of one year from date of purchase".

Protection Plans and upgraded or extended coverage agreements can have this clause. Our Square Trade Plan includes: "This Protection Plan may be transferred to any person in the United States at no charge."

Thanks Chuck, this answers my question! I was referring to the original manufacturer's warranty. It would be sad to purchase an expensive item thinking one has a warranty, only to find out they don't!
