I can't close the lid on my Epson V500

I've just bought and unpacked an Epson V500 but I can’t get the lid to close completely. I've unlocked the little button on the inside of the lid but it will only close to about 45 degrees. I tried a bit of gentle pressure which didn’t work and I don’t want to push it too hard in case I break something.

Each hinge is a little leg that fits in to a slot on the bottom part of the scanner. If I take the lid off and move each leg on it’s own they only move through about 45 degrees. Does anyone else with a V500 know what I’m doing wrong?

The lid on my Epson 4490 has three positions - straight vertical, 45 degrees, and closed. You only need a bit of pressure to push it down from the 45 degree position.

The V500 I use has 3 positions - vertical, 45 degrees. and horizontal. It takes a bit of force to move it out of those positions, likely to keep people from knocking the lid shut accidentally.
