Not Happy...Nikon 5000 ED Dying

The last three rolls through the Super Coolscan 5000 ED have been pretty difficult with the scans failing with the automated strip adapter on 1 of 4 scans. Tonight it was much worse with about 2/3rd of the scans failing. I suspect there is an issue with buffer memory

I am a bit peeved in that the scanner is not even two years old and has only scanned a few thousand frames. So off it goes to Nikon. Needless to say, I am not very inclined to purchase one of their cameras.

Oh no! You would hope for better than that.
Hope it's not too expensive...

Good luck,

We will see in regards to the expense. The telephone support guy gave me an estimate of just under $300 USD, maximum. I think he had been smoking funny cigarettes.

In the mean time, I have the V700 as a backup.

What do you mean by "failed?" The strip feeders' LEDs, which align the negatives, do die after a while, and you can buy a new feeder for $125-$175 on eBay. I can't pony up for that yet, so I'm reduced to scanning frames one by one using the strip adapter in the slide scanning module.

Thanks for the tip regarding the LEDs.

By fail, I mean that it does the AF and exposure read, starts the capture, but throws an error as the scan itself ends. At first, it happened on the 4th or 5th frame on a 5 frame strip. Last night, it was failing on about half of the first frames of a series. Ditto for single frame attempts. I suspect a failure of the scan buffer memory.

At least you have an option with the V700, although I suppose the 5000ED is what you really want for 35mm...

Scanner came back from Nikon yesterday and I am out $355 so far. Why do I say "so far"? Because, they were not able to reproduce the issue and now the autofocus is failing about 30% of the time as a result of the "clean and adjust" that they did do. May I also mention that they did not return my slide adapter with the scanner? I am not happy with Nikon...

Hmm, if they damaged the autofocus system and did not even return your slide adapter, surely you have some avenues to complain? and maybe even be compensated in some manner..?

Either way that sucks...

I am in dialog with Nikon and making a firm suggestion that they send me a call tag ASAP to get the thing properly repaired and and to reunite it with the missing slide adapter.

I'm sure you did this already, but I had some problems like that and they were solved by reinstalling the buggy Nikon software.

I did better than that! I installed and tested on a completely different computer to rule out possible IO issues. The scanner goes back to Nikon tomorrow.

Steve

Good luck this time around. I cross fingers that Nikon seems to have done a good job on my LS8000 if at a high cost. If not I would have to go back to the V700 as I sure could not afford a 8000/9000 now.

Cheers,

Luc

I hate to hear those stories. The equipment is so pricey to begin with.
