Any Epson 4490

I recently borrowed an Epson 4490 Photo from a friend. Ive used if with no problems to scan 35mm negs. But now I've got a couple of rolls of MF 6x6 film i want to scan. He didn't give me the MF holder and told me he never bothers with the holders anyway, and just scans them straight of the glass. So, I've attempted a few times to scan my medium format and the scanner wont recognize them and scans them as if they're 35mm. I would ask my friend but he's away on a skiing holiday, and I've asked on Flickr but member on here seem more knowledgeable and quicker to reply. Any advice?

Thanks in advance, James.

You should move this or post this in the scanning forum.
I have the Epson 4990,which is similar. I use the holders, but it is irrelevant. I use VueScan software which is better than the OEM. I don't even think the OEM software works on my newer OS anymore. Consider trying VueScan.

In Epson's software, you need to change the default setting for 35mm to a medium format setting. I don't have my Epson 4490 up and runnning right now but I believe the setting is in the advanced menu options.

EDIT: moved to correct forum.

I don't use thumbnails with 120 film, they don't always work out correctly + I shoot 6x4.5, 6x6, 6x7, 6x9, 6x12.... Just use the border box thing to pick out what you scan. Also, put the emulsion side down, and you may need to use masking tape or something thin/heavy to keep the film put and flat.
