Enlarger focusing

I just tried the grain focuser that I have for the first time, it seems to be white, then vague grain, then white again.

Is this the best tool for the job?

My eyeballs were pretty close to where the mirror grain thingy wants it.

You want to take the thickness of the paper into account too. When you have a scrap of photo paper left over from exposure strips place it under the focuser. If you always use the same weight of paper just glue a bit on the bottom of the focuser and trim it to size.

It's okay to compose and perform gross focus at maximum aperture,
but always fine focus with grain magnifier at the aperture you will be exposing at.
