Optimizing the Plustek 120?

Does anyone own the Plustek OpticFilm 120 and has a good handle on getting the most sharpness from this machine? I have had one for 6 months now and am wondering if I am getting the most from it.

Disclaimer right up front: I've not fooled around with film scanning (yet)... but I have kept tabs on David Brook's column in 'Shutterbug', where he's made a specialty of evaluating this process closely. In a nutshell, the key seems to be third party software, by his reckoning. Silverfast, in the case of the recommended Canoscan 9000 models. I don't know if that's the ticket for the Plustek, but check the Silverfast website.

Yep there is a Silverfast version for the Plustek 120 that has the Kodachrome profile, which is worth the cost of the s/w alone.

Yeah, it comes with Silverfast and it has quite a learning curve. Pretty good software once one gets used to it.

I have the same issue with Silverfast, brilliant on Kodachrome but I can only get so, so results with other films.

I guess the best bet would be to buy their profiles for other film types you use, but that seems to be expensive. Yes a lot of tweaking is necessary which I don’t have much interest in doing, so I get my Lab to do most of my scanning.

Phil: The color rendition has generally not been a problem with the Plustek/Silverfast. The Shutterbug article said that they were able to extract all the detail seen in the slide. I sure have not been able to do that so far. I am doubtful about the veracity of their statement.
