Lomography chrome films - purpose?

I got an email flier from Lomography advertising their purple and turquoise films. Has anyone tried these? I wonder about their purpose. It seems like the effect could be achieved with modern Fujicolor 200 and some clever post processing. These films don't feel as distinct as something Ektar vs. Porta.

Of course if you are projecting - or appreciate viewing them on a lightbox, post is not a convenient solution.
A distinct advantage of chrome over negatives is you can see exactly what the colors are supposed to look like.

I assumed from the title of your post that this film is "chrome" but it looks like you are referring to their LomoChrome Purple XR 100-400 which is actually negative film -> LomoChrome Purple XR 100-400 35mm Pack of 5 ? Lomography Online-Shop
In which case it's first purpose is to confuse me . . .

However, there are still those who would prefer the "natural - or unprocessed look" so if you want purplish tones there you go!
Another way to differentiate yourself?

The name is definitely misleading to me. When I read the word "chrome" I always think of reversal film. Lomography's chrome films seem to imply an artificial brilliance in color through traditional C-41 chemistry.

If the film wasn't so expensive I would be interested in trying it just to see what it does. At $15+ per roll I think I would rather get some Fujichrome or stock up on my favorite inexpensive film - Agfa Vista 200!

I can't think of any lomo film worth anything like $15 a roll. the problem with the hipster side of the equation is sometimes people develop and sell crap for high prices. that said some of the cameras are fun but still pretty pricey for what they are (the TLR for instance - you can probably find a much better yashica or minolta or other vintage unit for what they want for these plastic lens items

I got some of the purple stuff on sale at the NYC store. Haven't shot it yet. Not sure when I will get around to using it.

I do like some of their other film though.

I read somewhere, maybe apug.org, that Lomography sources their film from Lucky Film in China. Is that true?

I would think they are sourcing mostly from Lucky

For off brand I tend to stick to the films freestyle brands (at points I've had Tri-x and Fuji Neopan amongst others - mostly the eeastern european stuff now

Now I am wondering if in fact it is reversal film and the cross processing results in these wild colors? If it is then 400 speed slide film grain will be very fine but of course the latitude will not be as wide as typical 400 speed C41.
