Arista 400 EDU Ultra - dense negatives

I've shot a bit of Arista EDU 400 ultra in 4x5, shot at EI 400, developed it with rodinal 1+50 and at least twice now I've gotten dense negatives. The water is warm here, but I've been trying quite hard to get it within 1 degree (often more like 0.5) of 20C. Just curious if any of you have had a similar experience with it.

Is the camera calibrated? Did you bracket any exposures? Could these just be underexposed?

What lens are you shooting with? I shoot 4x5 with a Rodenstock lens and a Copal leaf shutter. The aperture is of course always spot on but the shutter being spring loaded can be significantly slower than it is set for.

UncleVanyaʻs suggestion to bracket is wise until you at least eliminate the leaf shutter from the cause of overexposed dense negs. If you have more than one lens, you could also try the other lens too.

I know you are using 4x5 but going by this pdf sheet here, it says Rodinal 1:25, my fav. for just about any film is ID-11.

Thanks for pointing me to this film, I reckon I'll try ot out when I can get some.

They're overexposed. That's true, I should enlist the help of my friend with a shutter speed meter to check if the shutter is off... I've been meaning to try bracketed shots, it's a bit of a chore when you can only develop 6 shots at a time. :P

I was thinking of getting another developer, I might try ID-11. I have some HC110 I need to mix, I might try that.

That's cool, I'll have to try that out.
