Fuji High-speed Film Recommendations?

Hello,

I just realized I am burning my Portra 800 inventory faster than I expected, and I might need to buy some high-speed film soon. I am currently in China and Fuji here is significantly cheaper than Kodak (and way cheaper than Fuji in the US). As I don't shoot Fuji a lot, I would like some recommendations on their high-speed line. I used to use 400H but was not blown away by it. I would like something boxed 400 or 800, and can be used at both speeds with normal process (no push or pull).

Sincerely

P.S. A seller is selling this film at a bargain price, does anybody know what this film is?

I have stopped using iso 800 because some exposures scan with grainy dye clouds, particularly in sky and light clouds.
The above is from Superia X-TRA 800
I have not had such a problem with 400H

I know that Fuji 400H and Natura (1600) have very good latitude, neutral color palettes and relatively fine grain but I don't know of a Fuji 800 film that is.

So do you mean that Fuji doesn't have a film comparable to Portra 800? A professional 800 speed C41 film?

But I had a roll of 400H gone bad because of storage issues. Is Xtra 400 better at easy storage?

P.S. I have read that Agfa films are actually made by Fuji. Is Agfa Vista 400 the same as Xtra 400 and the film in the original post?

That picture could easily be from the 1970s, until you look at the cars and realise they are modern. The film certainly gives the impression that it's been hanging around since then, which if it's the look you're going for is actually sort of cool - it can be interesting to see the modern world through an older emulsion's eyes, and it probably explains why the more meticulous lomographers take (carefully calculated) chances with decades-expired colour film.

That being said, if this stuff is being pushed as a true 800ASA emulsion, made in and for the second decade of the 21st century, then it is truly awful. Someone in QC needs to be fired. Probably several someones, and not a few of the senior management in developmental chemistry as well. I'm not sure there actually IS a true 800 ASA emulsion; just large batches of 400 which copes acceptably well at postcard size with a one-stop push, but falls apart the minute the limits are tested any further.

So for 800 and quality, Portra 800 and CineStill 800T are my only color negative choices for now?

The Fuji "Industrial" 100 and 400 is repackaged Superia.
I have seen some great work done with Fuji Superia 800.

There is also Lomo 800 (not sure how available it is in your area). AFAIK it's a older Kodak emulsion?

Last year I shot a roll of 35mm Lomo 800 @iso 640, and I was very impressed with it.

These are both from the roll

Just went through some of my scans and found that I used Fuji NPZ and Fujipress 800 which were both 800 speed color negatives. From my results I can see that NPZ has similar characteristics as Portra 800 in terms of latitude, color and grain. Fujipress 800 was slightly more grainy. I haven't see either here in the US - for awhile now, but wonder if they are available there?

I actually happen to have a roll of Fuji 1600 Natura in my MZ-S right now. A few shots into it. When I get it developed I'll post some pictures. I've used it before, but don't have any I can upload at the moment.

I got my hands on some of them today. And out of curiosity I checked it's DX codes.

Does anyone know this company?

Interesting, because the only Ferrania I know of is a lab which is currently trying to restart from nothing, dealing mostly in B&W film and attempting to resurrect an old film stock.

I like 400H but much more in 120 than in 135, the colours aren't the same for some reason. For 135 I prefer Superia 400. 400H is also incredibly expensive for what it is.

That Fujicolor seems to be a basic 400-speed film sold in Japan. I picked up a couple of rolls last week when I was there but so far I've shot only one roll and not developed it yet. It was much cheaper than Superia 400 or Superia Premium 400 but I only saw it in one place. They also had Fujicolor 100 in a similar box but only had rolls of 24.

I also picked up a couple of rolls of Natura 1600 but again, I haven't tried it yet.

The only fuji 800-speed film is Venus, a Japan-only film which is probably no cheaper than Portra. Lomography 400 seems pretty good from my limited use of it.

There are a bunch of sellers selling the 1600 in China, much more than sellers in the US. And they do domestic shipping.
