Linear Raw Scans?

Hello,

How much advantage does linear raw files offer when scanning slides (except in this example)? I have a roll of Velvia, and I plan to publish some of the frames. The lab usually turns in TIFFs for slides scanned on their Hassie Flextight X5, except upon special request, in which they will turn in linear raw files.

Sincerely

I am not sure, but I believe this is a Flextight feature. PF member @drmoss_ca is a Flextight owner. With any luck, perhaps he will provide some information.

Does your lab indicate what "raw" file type is provided?

They call it fff or 3f files and they have instructions on how to play with it in Photoshop. However I personally feel more at home with DxO and Affinity (though I am still on a CC student plan).

3f or .fff is the raw file format of the Flextight scanners (formerly Imacon, now Hasselblad). You can use the free FlexColor software (you have to register at Hasselblad to download it) to process the files. There is no steep learning curve involved but you should consult the manual. The advantage over tiffs is you can take care to avoid clipping while they might not. Apart from that, the software is not particularly powerful. Processing 3f files in Photoshop does not make much sense IMO.
