Super8 Gose beer

So apparently a brewery in the US has developed a beer together with Kodak that is capable of developing film!

This Beer Was Developed to Process Kodak Super 8 Film

I gather that this would work much the same as coffee development.

Any thoughts?

I think it’s disappointing, to be honest. You have to add your own Vitamin C and Baking Soda. At that point, what’s the point over caffenol? Just drink some beer and use something else to develop your B&W film.

I was stoked at the idea originally, though. 'Just mix with baking soda' would have also been fine.

I guess for me it is mostly the novelty. I've never even tried caffenol development. Will have to see if I can actually get this beer down in Australia anyway.

Thatís fair. The appeal of homemade developers for me either comes from a unique look in the final product, some sort of 'survivalist' desire, knowing I can still develop film even if the industry totally disappeared.

I do get a lot of joy from the chemistry of it all.

With baking soda you can't develop a film with coffee, beer or whatever... You need washing soda...

I suppose it's some kind of sponsoring, rather than something else...

ps: You can develop films with every beer, but the best is a dark beer (Guinness), not a "fruity" beer

D-23 is an easy developer to make at home. Two ingredients : Metol and Sodium Sulfite which are available from photography stores. You can mix it one-shot and always have fresh developer. A choice when you want good separation in your low values.

Thanks tuco, I'll have to try that sometime. Meanwhile I'm still trying to build my experience with a single developer before branching out. Currently using ID-11 which generally works well for me.
I would like to try 'caffenol' and other home made types at some point though.
