What are those?

Hi,
just came across frozen master rolls, went searching for them on the internet, but I didn't find a definition. Anybody here who could share their knowledge?
Thanks!

Could be some kind of edible???
Freezing film will retard any changes in its rendering so the term might refer to rolls which were exposed under specific conditions resulting in known image characteristics. These would then be frozen to avoid any changes in their reference value. Just guessing ----- now I'm hungry

"You can see how master rolls look and where they’re stored before they get cut into smaller formats. There are giant rolls of film, as well as all the pieces that make up the final roll of film."

I wonder if it is a term more from cinema than still photography?

It’s probably the initial roll, full length, that is cut in specified rolls. Should be including cinema and stills film.

Check this out:

KODAK: H-1 Film Identification - Print Friendly Version

The original sheet (long roll of [50" x 2000 ft]*) of film from which these strips are cut were referred to as "the master roll". It makes sense these would be put on ice until they were needed in production.

Quite "normal" for storing unexposed film, especially colour film, for an extended period of time.
Provided the film was in good condition when it was first frozen, 10 years later it will probably show no noticeable degradation.
In my experience, the only problem with frozen bulk film is that it's not very practical to thaw it out, cut off just a few strips and re-freeze the bulk remainder. It really needs to be all loaded into cassettes in one go. These can then be re-frozen if necessary, but they do take up rather more space!
My eventual conclusion was that bulk film is fine if you really do use that much of one type of film.
Buying something "cheap" to see if it "works" was rarely satisfactory!

Master rolls of film are something like four feet wide by a thousand feet long IIRC. This is the size of the substrate that the emulsion is coated onto. After manufacturing, a master roll will be cold stored until needed and then cut down and packaged for final sale to the customer.
IIRC, a master paper roll is closer to 8 feet by a thousand feet.
