My Pentax DSLR makes a rattling noise - is it defective? Something is loose inside!
Posted By: Adam, 10-22-2010, 06:43 PM

Question: My Pentax DSLR camera is making a strange rattling noise when I move it around, as if something were loose inside. What's wrong? Is my camera defective?

Answer: No- there is absolutely nothing wrong with your camera! This noise is caused by the Pentax shake reduction system, which allows the sensor to move around slightly within the camera. When the camera is powered down, the sensor shifts around freely, as there's no electrical current present to keep it in place. Don't worry about this- it's perfectly normal, and is not a sign of any problems!

idea?

Has anyone contacted pentax to see if they can put a HUGE disclaimer on the camera boxs that says something to the effect of; Don't worry about the clunking noise when your camera is off its perfectly normal. No matter how strong your urge is to start a thread at pentaxforums.com--DON'T DO IT!! I sense a little bit of tension in Adam's reply there, as well as, the other moderators when this question comes up!!

That should be added to the "Dear Pentax" thread- I think that it's a great idea. A caution or warning in the manual would be in order.

I thought my k-x manual mentioned something about that. I'll have to double check. I know that I wasn't concerned with it when I first handled my camera, so I think I was informed about it somehow.
