Pentax Lens Disassembly Database
Posted By: Chaos_Realm, 03-22-2012, 05:04 PM

Hi all,
I have recently been on the hunt for dis-assembly guides for the purpose of dust removal etc. They seem to be turning up in various places across the forum, so I plan on creating a list of all the Pentax lens disassembly posts here. I will categorise each lens like they are in the 'lens database' and you should be able to see which lenses have a guide and which do not. If I come across multiple guides then I will list them all under that lens so there is coverage or alternative explanations. And hopefully with your help we will be able to put together a substantial resource for the DIYer's here, although I do realize some lenses will never have an owner brave enough to strip down themselves due to the shear value. I know this will take quite some time but I think it will be worth it. I have restricted time at this point but I want to get the ball rolling. So here is what we have:

NB: Currently this tread is only for Pentax K-Mount & M42 Screw-mount lenses. Maybe once this has developed a bit I might look at introducing other pentax Mounts and or third party lenses and permitting time (and success of this resource) a cleaning guide with tips on tools and techniques. I am trying not to bite off more than I can chew for the moment so we will just stick with lenses listed below.

Not my fix, nor my site or photos. Just found it in the search for a guide to open up a 40 ltd. Ijust needed to take of the front for my issue. But I guess theese pictures can be good to have for others having trouble and want to open their 40 ltd.

Thanks Pentor, now added.
Any info helps. Even just seeing the lens in parts helps to give the viewer that little more understanding of how it all goes together.

Pentax-M 120mm 2.8 disassembly

Dear all,
Here is one first disassembly post for the database. As I am working about two days a week on old lenses and bodies (Mostly Pentax) I tend to take pictures of every new disassembly process.
Many come here with diaph blades stuck, or the little spring gone loose, or fungi. I had quite a pentax-A (KA) number recently having lost both the little golden spring and the little gold ball-shaped contact. I could fix them all using more recent broken lenses for spare parts. This is amazing and a joy to see the little golden contact hiding when leaving the "A" setting, then coming up back.

Anyway, please find attached PDF. First one, many more to come!

Can anyone help with a DA 55-300 lens? I've need to clean the far most lenses - some moisture managed to get in.
I've managed to disassemble the lens but the lens at the end comprises of two which are somehow joined in a metal housing that screws into the filter mount part.
I need to get in between these two optics but I'm not sure whether the metal housing is threaded.

If all else fails I might be able to use some parts from a DAL 55-300 lens. These seem a little different to the DA in construction - does anyone have diagrams for these lenses?

Takumar 135/3.5 preset, slight play in mount

Hi folks,

I have a Takumar 135/3.5 Preset (M42), and it has developed a slight play in the mount section (tube) that telescopes under the focusing barrel. I have removed the back retaining ring, and see two more concentric retaining rings around the back lenses, but they seem tight. There is enough play that, when mounted, I can, very slightly, move the lens up and down. I've looked at the other disassembly instruction on the net for this lens, but there doesn't seem to be a pictorial (or even text) for the preset version of the lens. It has a 6 digit serial number starting with 799, if that helps for the vintage. The lens works pretty well, even with the slight wobble, but I work in macro with extension tubes, and even a slight bit of wobble is difficult to handle. I haven't attempted to go in through the front, but I'd rather not unless someone can tell me that the back mount tube can be (or must be) tightened from the front. Has anyone done maintenance on this lens enough to know how to tighten the back mount and tube? Thanks for any advice.

I've stripped it down. It's the last bit that I can't get apart. I've used a duff DAL lens and replaced parts from that. It's not 100% as it doesn't want to focus at the telephoto end. but I've got a usable lens instead of two duff ones.

Hi, I have a question about the DA 35mm F/2.4 - I've just picked one up with a fault and I would like to get opinions about a potential teardown / fix. The issue is a stiff focus ring which apparently prevents AF from working correctly. MF is fine. Anyone had any experience with this lens or thoughts about a repair ? Cheers

There's no quick shift on that lens, so the stiffness you feel in the manual focus is the same amount of force teh focus motor is struggling against. Is there a viscous feel to it, or does it feel like there might be particles or grit in it? If either of those is true, you probably will have to clean the helical.

To get to the focus helical, you will have to tear it down from the front. The good news is that you can probably leave all the electronics in the back in place. I haven't worked on that particular model, but it likely has an inner cell with the large threaded helical, and a brass ring/toothed gear arrangement for the complimentary fine helical, similar to the one in the 35mm Ltd. MAcro I tore down above.

Hey thanks for the quick reply. I haven't actually got my hands on the lens yet, it's still on its way to sunny NZ :-) I did think it might share some genetics with the 35 Macro so I had a quick look at the teardown you did on that one. Doesn't look TOO scary so we shall have to see. I'm thinking it's likely to be grit (maybe sand or something) in the helical so I'm hopeful. I have pulled down a couple of lenses before just for fun that were totally and utterly dead and not worth fixing so I'm ready to have a look at this one now :-)

Hey mate, I've received the lens now and discovered two things - firstly, it has to be torn down from the back, so all the mount electronics etc need to be removed and secondly the 'information relay fork' is mashed. The fork has three of five pins screwed so I need to try and find a replacement......any ideas on how I go about that ? I've emailed a couple of 'Ricoh Imaging Service and Repair' agents here in NZ and in Australia so I'm waiting to see if any parts are available.

Cheers.

I saw a thread around here once where someone had fashioned one out of some thin wire and had success with it. If you post a pic, I might be able to tell if it's interchangeable with one from a different model (and possibly send one if it is ).

Hey, thanks for the quick reply mate. Yes, I've just read the one about the thin wire and it looks great but I'm not much of a one for fabrication I'm afraid !! Here's the offending item - obviously the 'stiff' focusing was due to the pins being bent back underneath themselves and ultimately breaking up.....

AGH - forget it mate - I just moved the focusing assembly on my desk and the electrical contact strip fell into three pieces !! Looks like what ever was going on the focus issue maybe caused excessive movement of the tiny little ribbon cable and it has disintegrated !!! Looks like it's MF only for me with this lens :-(

An update, if you're interested .I've managed to find a Ricoh Imaging sales & service agent here in New Zealand ( Christchurch to be exact ) who have supplied me a schematic for the lens and it looks like the parts I need can be obtained :-)

No mate, I only have the DA35 because I'm buying parts for it. I can ask the service centre though and see if they can help.
