Hi all,
I have recently been on the hunt for dis-assembly guides for the purpose of dust removal etc. They seem to be turning up in various places across the forum, so I plan on creating a list of all the Pentax lens disassembly posts here. I will categorise each lens like they are in the 'lens database' and you should be able to see which lenses have a guide and which do not. If I come across multiple guides then I will list them all under that lens so there is coverage or alternative explanations. And hopefully with your help we will be able to put together a substantial resource for the DIYer's here, although I do realize some lenses will never have an owner brave enough to strip down themselves due to the shear value. I know this will take quite some time but I think it will be worth it. I have restricted time at this point but I want to get the ball rolling. So here is what we have:

NB: Currently this tread is only for Pentax K-Mount & M42 Screw-mount lenses. Maybe once this has developed a bit I might look at introducing other pentax Mounts and or third party lenses and permitting time (and success of this resource) a cleaning guide with tips on tools and techniques. I am trying not to bite off more than I can chew for the moment so we will just stick with lenses listed below.

Cleaning fungus - what's your favorite chemical. I've come across the following in videos and websites. 1) dish soap 2) mix of ammonia and hydrogen peroxide 3) lighter fluid 4) sensor cleaning solution.

I have taken apart the front of an Tokina AT-X Pro 828AF 80-200 F2.8 ED for a small 4mm diameter fungus.

It involved removing 3 small grub screws and 2 rings, for 2 lens elements, and I have the glass with the fungus on the back removed and exposed. Trying to decide which way to go on the fungus removal.

I have the fluids for the first 3 methods. Are there any others? Looking for experience before I try one of the methods listed above.

I cleaned it with a q-tip and ammonia/peroxide mix. Follow up - whats the best way to leave the lens streak free when I try and wipe it off.

Keep it simple for just a wee spot. Moisten a dried out cheap sachet optical wipe tissue paper with a touch of meths/ethanol/similar leavened with a drop of something that contains a detergent - I use household mould and mildew remover, seemed appropriate! Rub the fungus spot off and then wipe over with the tissue, blow off any dust, reassemble, done.

50% hydrogen peroxide (3% is the usual household strength, I have 10% here and dilute it down with destilled water)
50% ammonium hydroxite (25% - 32% household ammonia)


that was the mix Zeiss once even had on their webside but it's gone.

Hydrogen peroxid is very important to crack fungus-cells!
In households a mix of hydrogen peroxid, vinegar, borax and water is very good and without hydr.per. the solution cannot penetrated deep enough
and thus the fungus survives and returns

The difficulty can be coatings but I would never risk to keep a lens with possible spores with other lenses
and thus this means thorough cleaning of everything, not just a bit of glass.

There are many different opinions and I don't claim to be a specialist.

Lets see... a SMC M50/1,4 has to be cleaned in few days. It is in a completly different room so it can't infect any other lens.
Maybe too careful, but I'd rather be too carefull than careless!

But I think this question does not belong into this section, there are others or just a new thread?

So, here's how to take apart the front of the Tokina AT-X 828AF PRO 80-200mm F2.8 Lens
- 3 tiny grub screws on the side of the lens - tiny flathead - loosen but dont remove. Now the decorative ring can be removed by moving it forward.
- This allows easy access to the screwed on rings with the slotted notches. I used an Amazon Neever angled tool with the pointed end side to get these rotating. They were tight, and I did generate some scratches. Remove the inner most one, one lens comes out. Then remove the next ring, second lens comes out. The fungus was on the inside of the second lens.
- This is pretty easy (but scary the first time) to do.

I used 50/50 peroxide and ammonia on a q-tip to remove the fungus.

I tried isopropyl alchohol as well as lighter fluid on both camera paper and eyeglass microfiber to clean the lenses.

However, I've generated some smudges (barely visible) when putting it all pack together, and some dust got in too, but I doubt it will impact the image.

I'll be tackling some other lenses and will take pictures of the how-to of those and post them. Once I figure out how to put back lenses cleanly, I'll redo this one.

I'm trying to repair my SMC-M 100 F4 Macro - typical lens glue separation issue. Very easy to remove the faulty element. I have it soaking in Weldon 3, which should dissolve the old optical glue. I'll post more to this thread once the glass is apart.

i ussually heat it up in hot water or a heat gun and slide it apart

Does heat work on the 100 f4? I'll try it on my second lens. All my reading suggested that hot water works on older lenses that were joined using balsam, but lenses joined using optical glue required chemical dissolving.

Hello. An update. So after a month of so of soaking in Weldon-3, when I checked this am and shock the bottle, the 2 lens elements separated!

So the Weldon works. I initially had it in a glass jar, which dried out, so I switched to one with a better lid, and also zip locked it. That seems to have kept the fluid intact.

Now to fish them out, clean them, figure out which is on top, and then reglue them!

BTW, I had tried boiling them, did not work. Did not try a heat gun.
