SD card slot on the K5

Remember how people were complaining about how difficult it has been to get the SD card out of the K7 slot?

I was wondering if that is still the case with the K5.

Little, tiny, maybe irrelevant detail but, hey! why not ask?

Don't actually have a problem with my K-7 now, it's loosened just a tad and that is all that was needed.

Compare to my K10D, I felt the SD card door was awkward to say the least at the beginning. Somehow, I get used to it now and in fact I feel more protection from moisture and sand with the rubber cover.

The trick to the K-7 card slot is to press the card in then get your finger out of the way to let the card pop up. The SD card comes out easily this way.

Apparantly the SD cards were very very difficult to get out of all but one of the K-5's at the show, seems the card door wouldn't open. Looks like super glue is the new weather sealing technique being used by Pentax

The first time I tried that, I launched the card across the room. That spring is pretty strong.

Its a relatively easy issue to fix for a redesigned body.
Pentax has shown a lot of attention to user feedback, and I can see they fixed many (not all ) of the K-7's shortcomings in the K-5. Just need to reconfirm with an actual body.

Believe me, I do take care of letting the card "slide out" after pushing on it.
But, compared to that of the K10D and K20D, I found it a bit annoying ... nothing major!
I just like to know from others what they think.

We will soon see.

It's not major but it is a constant annoyance: every time you pull the card you have to futz with it. Moving the slot a hair towards the rear of the body would probably fix it. Little ergonomic things like this mean a lot in day to day use. They should totally fix it.

I agree, this is a constant annoyance!

I checked the K5 and it's the same. Very difficult to remove the card.
The "trick" to let it pop out did not work.
It is incomprehensible to me, how they could leave it this way.

Very big minus.

The engineer who is guilty of this in the K7 is incapable!
But also those are to be blamed who allowed it again in the K5.

I have always wondered about the reports of tight SD cards.
My K200D came new with 2 store supplied 2GB "Silicon Power" cards and they are as smooth as silk to get in and out.

Recently I bought a generic 4GB SDHC card and it is tighter than a ferret up a drainpipe.

Perhaps Pentax build to the iso standard sizing for SD and SDHC cards but many card manufacturers tolerances are sloppy big ??.

Are we knocking Pentax for better engineering than other brands....??

It's a little tight, but in the global scale of things, I'm not losing sleep about it. Open the cover, push it down to spring it and it's in my hands within 3 seconds.

I suppose life would be better if it was 2, but hey

Cards are plastic and dimensions are not rigidly controlled. Some are better than others. If card is sticky, use a fine file or fine sandpaper on the top and bottom edges to loosen it up a little.

The card isn't too thick.
It is held back by something.

Compare the card slot with a K10 or K20.

Well, we cannot do anything anyway.
Have to live with it another generation.
