K5 Buffer

Ok just in playing I have found the k5 will only take 4-5 shots in RAW at ISO above 1600 or so, Everything correction wise is shut off except the NR (set to lowest possible)
Below 1600 it shoots the full 8 frames and does clear rather well/fast
any tidbits?

Just tried it and I got:
9 @ ISO 200
9 @ ISO 1600
8 @ ISO 3200
4 @ ISO 6400
4 @ ISO 12800
4 @ ISO 51200

Also, for what it's worth, I found that shooting at high ISO (>6400) really slows down the camera. After you take a shot it takes a good 1-1.5 seconds to display the image on the LCD. Corrections are turned off, and I had a feeling it has something to do with the NR on high-ISO files. However even when I turned the high-ISO NR off, the delay is still there.

It makes sense. The highest true hardware-based ISO is 1600. Above that, the image processor is doing an increasing amount of work on "amplification", and the fps slows down. Its likely only partly related to NR.

Those who do a lot of drive-mode shooting won't be happy with this. I rarely use drive-mode, but its a useful standby.

Good to see I am not the only one
As i am happy with a few welcome supprizes in custom functions etc I am also a tad disappointed with this development... Humm
Well it gets its first workout tomorrow shooting a ribbon cutting and event to follow,

Bummer statistic.

That was one feature I was hoping was just rumour. I wonder why Pentax would have put in so much effort in the drive rate only to fall short with the processor.

Well I guess I fall in that category also that uses drive mode only occasionally, but it may deter those were keen on sports and contemplating the K-5.

This is the one feature that still have me sitting on the fence. Granted they seem to have done a great job on the K-5, but couldn't they have put in alittle more buffer? Is it a special type of buffer memory? Very expensive? Is that why they are so limited?

I shoot sports and there are times i need more than 7 shots. The arena are not always brightly lit because they are not professional events.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but even if you switch to JPEG (instead of RAW), you only get 6-7 shots at high iso before the camera needs a short break to "think".

I think the sensor goes up to 12800 (native), but I think I heard NR gets applied to the RAW file above 1600? Does that sound right?

I think there is a high and a low. The high is something like 7fps, maybe? The low is 2-3 fps (I think).

Above that, the image processor is doing an increasing amount of work on "amplification", and the fps slows down. Its likely only partly related to NR. Those who do a lot of drive-mode shooting won't be happy with this. I rarely use drive-mode, but its a useful standby.
