K-5, ISO12800 Practical Portrait (Part 3)...

Following our last example, it was pointed out(by a number of people) that the lighting may have contributed to the final IQ of the sample. Therefore, I have just received permission from dgaies to release a low light sample at the same sensitivity.

To which I think should put to rest any/and all doubt that the K-5 is indeed a serious low light performer

UNPROCESSED RAW: ISO12800, 1/80s

PROCESSED RAW: ISO12800, 1/80s

Click(view image) for full size sample

PROCESSED RAW CROP: ISO12800, 1/80s

As with the previous sample, this was processed with minimal NR(single pass) and very little PP. In a word... Amazing!

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our good man dgaies who has gone far out of his way to provide us with these wonderful samples! - So thanks buddy! we couldn't have done this without you(literally ).

Impressive detail, even down to the (very) bloodshot eyes.

Did you look at the image full size?
I'm completely awestruck by this sensor tbh.

I think we can attribute the bloodshot eyes to a severe lack of sleep, which should then be attributed to the subjects of part 1 and 2 of this thread (i.e. the four and one year old).

The thing is... from a detail point of view, that's really a great part of the image.
I doubt anyone even considered criticizing this shot. Its perfect for what it is imo!

May I come to rescue?

I can't read the text in the TV screen reflecting in sleepless mother's pupil.

That's totally inacceptable. No way I'll let go my digital view camera

I mean the shot is good but a 5D should be able to match it no problem. mark ii even more so.

I've seen some MKII ISO12800 output(just recently) and its definitely ahead in terms of resolving power. However, I found the DR gamut to be a little narrow. Particularly in the shadow end of the curve. The other things were tinging and slight banding. Though neither really came across as deal breakers.

On the posisitive side, the MKII has amazing highlight recovery, and of course, image definition is second to none, the most impressive I've seen.

On the issue of the 5D, I was under the impression that it maxed-out at ISO3200?

I believe you are correct. This comparison seems apropos:

Nikon D300, D200, D40 and Canon 5D High ISO Comparison

Weird to think that the Nikon D300 was the APS-C high ISO king not too long ago.

Looking at the comparometer on Image Resource, it looks like the K-5 sensor is pushing into D700 and 5D Mark II territory as far as high ISO goes. I'll be interested to see if that holds to be true after formal testing.

Maybe I phrased that incorrectly, "formal" would probably not be the right word. I'll change that to "comparative reviews by various websites."
