The salesman usually lets me test the camera(s) ... bought the K10D, K20D and K7 from there. I'll put it through the paces in the store: lots of dimmed light areas, bright and backlit in some others, possibility to aim though large windows onto the nearby busy streets, people moving about, etc ...
