Pentax K-5 in US is more expensive than in...

This is very strange ...

Usually, the price of Camera in the US is cheaper than those sell in my home country, Malaysia.

The price of K-5 body only is RM3,998.00 = USD1,285.53

The price of K-r w/ 18-55mm kit lens is RM2,198.00 = USD 706.75

And this is online price, if you go to real store I believe you can get further discount...

Here, B&H price:
K-5 Body only USD $1,499.95 (after $100 rebate)
K-r w/18-55mm kit lens USD $811.87 (Before $100 rebate)

WoW.... Why???

FYI, from what I understand, there is no $100 rebate unless you actually have the rebate card from the show... the pdf copy on bhphoto's website won't be accepted (per Adam's post).

...or you can wait until late December when Pentax will realize the retail price was too high to begin with and the adjustments will be made by then.

True.

If you don't need/want the K5 right away (want in my case), the price will most certainly drop at some point. Not sure when, or by how much, but it certainly won't stay at $1600 forever

I know those things. What I am saying is, the price at which they are selling NOW is lower than what we are getting in the US. which, is not the case in the past. Usually, SLR cameras are cheaper in the US than in those places even when they first came out...

It is to be expected.
The US dollar is at or near a record low against the Japanese Yen. So it is to be expected that the import price and consequent selling price would be higher than before. With the weaker purchasing power and with the US economy tanking, the ability for the average US consumer to buy would consequently be weaker. The average US consumer has typically a heavy credit exposure and a pattern of very low savings, a terrible combination any which way you look at it. Moreover the Fed has already moved to print more money to bail out the economy...

I think they realized they have lost too much money with lower US prices, which for a part have been "equalized"with higher prices for the rest of the world....

I am not sure the arguments about the weaker dollar really hold up in regards to the K5 price. Both the 60D and D7000 are cheaper than their predecessors were at launch. The price may be a little higher than otherwise due to some of the external economic factors (external to Pentax). I think they knew that there would be a limited supply at launch and priced accordingly. When they hit full production, retailers will have to sell at a lower price.

I'm guessing that the K5 will be around $1300 by Xmas and perhaps closer to $1000 by this time next year.
