"%08d" and "%04d" are most likely not variable names, but instead formatting instructions for generating the filename. In a printf() statement, for example, they would be replaced by an 8- and 4-digit long number, respectively (with leading zeros if necessary).

To me, it looks like the new filename is all-numeric. Maybe try with the serial number (with a leading zero) ?

It seems that even the proper extensions is not known at the moment.
Newest firmware contains "C:\%08d.%03d" string. So we have to guess not only 8 digit number, but also 3 digit extension. What is worse, it is possible that every new firmware version will use different numbers.

I hacked mine. Not only was I able to fix the FF issue and flash problem, I can now use the camera to open my garage door or turn on my microwave oven.

J/K of course...

That would be awesome if you could sync the garage door with your flash. I would really be impressed if it happend faster then 1/180sec.....Seriously though I might be willing to try a hack that would allow shooting over the sync speed.

My 2 cents:
- Maybe these numbers are combinations of what is stored in eeprom (int. serial, prod. date, ...)
- Or it is somehow encrypted in the firware

In both cases:
If we know how to get these values, it will not be worse with the next fw (if any...)

I was used to reverse PC software using Softice, ollydbg and the good old w32dasm89 long time ago and would like to start to play a little with the pentax FW in my spare time. However, I am not used to IDA.

Can someone give me a starting aid? Any good tutorials for IDA?

Furthermore:

* I googled a little and found notes that Pentax K-5 uses a Fujitsu Milbeaut M5 processor. Is any technical info available (Language Ref, Programmers Guide, Datasheets ...)? Did not find anything useful.

Best wishes
K.

Wouldnt it be nice if someone could hack it.

Im just so jealous of a friend whos running a hack/addon software on his Canon 5DmkII called "Magic Lantern".
It installs next to the firmware and offers things like HDR video, boosted framrates and great audio controls + a lot more.

Heres a small video showing the "HDR" video:

And here's more info: Magic Lantern Firmware Wiki

I found the debug mode and was able to calibrate my 55-300 lens to great success. It is tack sharp now! Before the +/-10 just wasn't enough for the lens. Turns out it needed about + 17. I now live in Okinawa and there is no Pentax shop on the island so I had to do it myself. Worked out pretty good!

Beware: When you accept advice from Ricehigh, you are following the blind. You do remember what your Momma told you about measurebating? Well, Ricehigh didn't listen and he is as blind as a one eyed bat....he measurebates 24/7.......I feel nasty just typing his name...

Regards!

Hi guys, RE. DEBUG K5.
OK I'm all new, with an interesting number for you all who are interested in debugging their K5! This is strictly for those who know (for the moment) about debugging and are familiar with the processes. I have no details just this number;
00077430.505 well here it is; for those who dabble in debugging, I hope someone will have luck with it.

If this is what we are looking for and you have success with it, post on this forum. Good luck we will see.

Hi Anvh,
RE. debug K5
Is your "we" the "royal we" ? I'm sure you're speaking on behalf of all Pentaxians! but maybe not those who are looking to access the debug mode via their SD card.

I do not have success with this number.

Tried
[DEBUG_MODE EN]
and
[OPEN_DEBUG_MENU]

in the file and pressend menu while turning on the camera with sdcard-door open and close, also tried delete-button...nothing.

What will a serial number do help to with that?
A serial number is not needed for the hack and so i said we/they don't need it.

As for the debig menu for the K5, PKtehter program works, not sure about with new firmware though
