About an hour's drive to the west of the world famous Mont Saint-Michel lies the Bay of Saint-Brieuc, a vast coastal saltwater marsh that provides a home to many bird species, grasses, and mosses. Freshwater streams carry byproducts from agricultural runoff into the bay, creating deadly patches of toxic algae. Adjacent beaches are often closed and not a small number of dogs have fallen victim to the fatal gases. My MIL, now in her 80s, often recounts how she and a friend would often travel across the muddy bottom on foot at low tide, earning deep sunburns as their badge of courage for making the journey.
