Should SR noise occur when SR is off?

When I have SR turned off, or when I use a lens (such as Lensbaby) that does not emit info to allow SR to be turned on, I still hear what seems to be the SR mechanism.

I set shutter speed to two seconds and took a photo with SR both on and off. Still there was a small grinding noise during long exposure.

I definitely see an effect (not at 2 seconds, but a reasonable shutter speed), so SR doesn't seem to be active when turned off.

Any ideas why there is any noise coming from the camera when SR is off?

Hmmm, tried a few more times. Sometimes the noise is louder with SR on, if I listen carefully.

Just on a hunch I put the thing in Mirror lockup mode. The whole time the mirror was up, but no exposure allowed yet, the noise was still there.

Could it be that the mirror lockup mechanism consistently that noisy?

The sensor is held in position by the same mechanism that is responsible for shake reduction. Consequently it makes a similar noise whether SR is on or off.

Duh. Well, I haven't felt that stupid in a while.
That makes a lot of sense.
Thanks.

Oh, no reflection on your post. Nothing you could have said would make me feel better.
It is an obvious answer that I should have been able to work out myself.
