I have one of the first K5s off the production line and it has a perfectly clean sensor.

I find it very hard to believe that currently 65% of respondents have sensor stains.

Yes, there may be the odd genuine case, but most I have seen look like classic. f22 dust particles.

No stains on mine. Purchased in U.S. from Amazon on Black Friday, November 26th. Serial Number 3900xxx.

I've checked two days in a row now. Getting paranoid. A few dust particles around (I think), but nothing else except a variety of hallucinations from panning the clouds too much.

Did not find it on my new K-5 despite 2 days of taking pictures of walls. Still, clearly lot of people have those and i think Pentax really has to do something about it and not use "stay silent and problem will go away" approach. They want to be expensive brand - well they have to spend more on quality control and be more open to public. If the problem is as widespread as this poll shows - same old approach to this issue will drag Pentax down again, but if Pentax will be able to show people that they do stand behind their products even in hard times, it can actually gain from this mess.
Serial number - 3894*** , purchased from BH.

It does not look like dust and from what I can see from other people images is that the pattern seems quite similar (row of "particles" near the center ).

Yes, but my point is that there are not many people showing that.
I very much suspect that a lot of the people voting YES simply have normal sensor dust

So well over 50% of owners have stains at the moment.... I think i'll wait at least until the poll shows less that 50%

Does this mean we'll get a rash of refurbished K-5's in the next couple of months at bargain-basement prices?

There is a rumor floating about that the problem may worsen (i.e., development of more spots) if the camera heats up (movie mode?). This seems unlikely though. I'll run the test myself after I decide whether to replace or switch.

Unfortunately, I doubt Pentax will ever admit to this. Hopefully I'm wrong. So many others have reminded us on this forum and elsewhere of the corporate silence following SDM issues and Kx focus blur.

I didn't think I had this problem but after a few test shots I've changed my mind.
I've had dust spots on my K10D and GX20 that were easily removed with a blower, this doesn't look like a dust spot.

One very sturdy spot, accompanied by a smaller one. Nothing like dust. The camera store first tried to clean the sensor: last sunday (yeah) three times, blowing the thing and wet cleaning it. It didn't work. All it did was introducing .... dust. Then I was told to return monday (today - I did), because then the very special service man would be in. Wow, he kept cleaning for 45 minutes, removing all yesterday's dust. He got really mad as those spots just, you know, stayed where they were, near the center, left and a bit up. Cann't miss it, cann't get rid of it. He declaired himself defeated, the camera is sent in to Pentax Service Center De Beukelaer, Holland. If all goes well, I might hear from them in six weeks. I wonder what will be.

My K-5 has a string of stains

My K-5 serial is 3830XXX

Note...

I looked at my K-7 and K-5 now ...

Both my cameras have a number of particles. Some seem to sit on another layer, judging from the umbra/penumbra diameters. So, I guess, a singular dust particle every some and then is unavoidable.

What is different with my K-5 (and the other images I see) is that there is a string of particles (in the upper left quadrant) which other cameras probably don't have. cf. image where I marked the stain positions in red.
