Setting "exposure" for live view?

I'm trying to set focus manually ( at the moon ) by using live view, but the moon shows up as a white blob. Is there a way to manually set the "exposure" for live view?

Well, if you set a negative Ev comp, the live view takes it in account and darkens. But maybe it will ruin your shot? If you are in M mode, it won't bother you.

Center the moon in the frame and use spot metering (which you should be using for moon shots anyway). It will meter off the moon and the live view will adjust its gain accordingly. Any other metering mode will meter off the black sky and blow out the moon, both in live view and in the final shot.

I ended up using spot metering and it works as long as I keep the moon in the middle, but it moves and the exposure changes. (I'm in manual mode so the actual shoot is not affected). It won't work on a thin new moon though.

There is definitely room for improvements here.
