What does it cost to repair an SDM lens?
I paid £95 to have my DA* 16-50 repaired by Asahi Photo in Brentford. I was very surprised that it was so reasonable - and they provided an excellent service.

My son had dropped one of his Canon lenses and now the autofocus doesn't work. He was quoted various prices, from £60 to about £200, plus parts.

I was suprised at the £60 because I used to pay several times that to have my old 1970s Olympus lenses cleaned after a sandstorm in Arizona and that was 20+ years ago.
I just paid $150 with CRIS in AZ to repair DA* 16-50. 6 month warranty.

This puts an interesting perspective on extended warranty costs. I have just paid £45 for a 2 year (i.e. 3 years total) warranty extension on a 17-70 DA with Jessops.

Of course, a possible fix to this whole FF thing might be to expand the range of focus adjustment from +10 to -10 to something like -25 to +25. That, I think, would be possible in firmware and would require only a simple menu adjustment when one knew the light was low. Not a perfect solution, but a workable one. Unless it's a sliding scale as the light gets lower.
It is a sliding scale. As i progressively dimmed the light! And using the camera tripod mounted shooting a focus chart, the degree of front focus gradually inceasedcas the lighting progressively dimmed.

Interesting observation! However, usually when one dims a tungsten light, there is also a color shift towards the red. So now the question is what is the gradually increasing FF is caused by?
1 brightness
2 color temperature
3 combination of brightness and color temperature
4 more factors such as IR content.

Probably a number of factors. It's certainly a sliding scale though.

My dealer is going to call Pentax Tomorrow and see what the score is. I told him that if firmware isn't arriving soon I want a replacement

Yes they did
7th March 20011 they released FW 1.03 to address this issue.

Besides SmeggyPants camera which had other issues requiring dealer replacment the non faulty cameras were fixed.

Not sure how a 2 year old thread has any relevance to k5ii or k5iis , The changes in the new boides are extended baseline and higher sensitivity.

If your experiencing FF with the kit lens on the K5 then the same fault is as likley on the k5ii ot iiS and the answer is the same send it for service.

The differences in the new camera are it will track AF better, lock faster and more accuratley with f2.8 and faster lens, and focus in lower light. there is no fix FF under red light fix mentioned in this release probably becasue it was fixed March 2011.

Then why are so many 1.03 users still having problems? Are all of them simply idiots who don't know how to use the camera?

Not idiots, but read through this incoherant thread and you will see people talking about 20 different subjects and 10 different definitions of various problems or issues. And 'so many 1.03 users still having problems' is based on what sample size?

The FW 1.03 improved the FF issue a little, but it was far from fixed. I tried 3 different K-5 cameras from different stores, and all have the same issue, with Pentax lenses and Sigma lenses.

An upgraded to the K-5ii made perfect sense, since the k-5 is a very good camera in all other aspects. Its low light focus issue was the main problem that only few people noticed because it required specific conditions for it to occur. For what I was using it for it was a problem for me.
