K-5 & Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX OS HSM

Hello everyone. I am new to Pentax forums.
Does anybody have actual experience with the K-5 and Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 EX OS HSM, specially about AF function . Do they work well together K-5 and Sigma ?

please do not be offended by the lack of response. But the lens you are asking about is not very attractive. Usually people buy Tamron if they are limited by budget or DA* pentax when they want the best standard zoom.
Sigma doesn't seem attractive to many in this competition.

Sigma AF 17-50mm f/2.8 HSM DC EX OS - Review / Test Report

So how does the DA*17-50 compare
Pentax SMC DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED [IF] SDM - Review / Test Report

I don't have one, but I do have a Sigma 17-70 HSM OS and it is my fastest focusing lens, the OS is superb, and the IQ is very good. Sigma is making some very nice glass to fit Pentax, and we should be thankful they are. My Bigma 50-500 is one of my favorite lenses.....where would I get such a lens without Sigma?

Hmm, I'd pick the Sigma over the DA*16-50mm f2.8 anyday,
those SDM failures and costly out-of-warranty repairs aren't too attractive!

You are making a very valid point here.
Pentax does lack a lot of lenses: >300mm, <10mm, a rectilineair <12mm zoom, <f4 300mm, TC's, etc, etc.

Sigma and Tamron are extremely important and I would have left Pentax for N or C a long time ago without them filling in the Pentax shortcomings.
The problem however is the variety in quality between the Sigma and Tamron lenses. Some designs are outstandig, some designs are average and some below average.

IMHO you need to be selective in your choices.

Sorry but that comparison is not valid. Klaus had particulary bad Da*16-50 from early production. Nowdays the Da*16-50 are far better, including better SDM drive. The CA were more pronounced on K10D than on later bodies.
My 50-500 is not very convincing, but I like my sigma 180mm macro a lot. But sigma a DC zooms I saw (the old 18-50/2,8, both the 17-70) are junk.

So what do you call a SDM lens out of warranty with a failed motor? Also, I would love to see a comparison of your Sigma 50-500 shots with your Pentax DA 50-500 shots? Can you post a few of those for us?

Maybe not up to your standards, but for me the Bigma is superb for a low priced lens that gets me a ton of shots I would otherwise miss.

Well perhaps your 50-500 is better than mine. I have the old version of it. Or you are better photographer. I also got few nice shots with the 50-500, but whatever I do they lack contrast compared to good telephoto primes. But that is OT here.

SDM fails are very rare. I know personally dozens of DA* owners and only one of them had such problem. That is about the same amount as failures of SWD, USM or HSM motors I heard about.

Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, Voigtlander,...anyone! If they make a lens for Pentax it is good news to me. It gives me choices and broadens the line. We can all pick and choose which ones suit our needs or standards, but it they aren't there, then there is no choice at all.

I have a Tamron 18-250, not a superb lens, but very decent for a handy walk-about. Pentax thought enough of it to use it and give it a Pentax label.........choices are good!

Well, not in my case. I have two DA* lenses and one of them has had three SDM failures so far.

FYI I have:
17-70mm f2.8-4.5
50-500mm f/4-6.3
105mm f/2.8 Macro
30mm f/1.4 Wide Aperture

I may get the 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6

I don't think you're a rare bird at all. I have the following Sigma lenses myself

50-500mm f/4-6.3 EX (Bigma)
105mm f/2.8 Macro
70-300 f/4-5.6 APO
18-50 f/2.8 EX
70-200 f/2.8 HSM II

All are good lenses. I also have a pretty substantial collection of Pentax lenses.

I've got the Sigma 17-50/2.8 EX OS HSM, bought primarily for the HSM as I didn't want to run the SDM gauntlet, and I leave the OS off and just use the in-body SR. Lens is sharp, AF is fast and quiet, and I've shot a few events and did some bridal/wedding shots with it as well. It does come with a price premium over the usual non-pentax alternative, the Tamron 17-50/2.8 though, but the quiet AF wins hands down for me.

I've had nothing but positive experiences with Sigma HSM as well, owning four Sigma HSM lenses.

You can see my two Sigma lens in my signature and I love them both. The focusing of the HSM in my 70-200 is great sharp and accurate.

For me its Pentax or Sigma Lenses.
