k-5 write speed

When shooting in RAW it seems to take a while for the images to write to the card and then show up on instant review. I came from an K10D where there wasn't much of a wait at all. Is this normal on the K-5? I'm using an Sandisk Extreme III 4GB card so I don't think its the card.

hi there, it is normal, it happens on my k5 even when shooting jpg, and I've seen numerous posts across a number of forums stating this too.

I don't really think they've increased the bus speed all that much from the K10 to the K5, but they have increased the file size a whole bunch.
The K5 isn't instant gratification WRT the review screen.

Probably some sort of in-camera processing- lens correction or what not that is slowing you down...

I have all that stuff turned off. There is definitely some processing, but at 7 frames per second, the camera can certainly pack files into the buffer in a hurry. The camera is just plain slow to write.

I have a Sandisk 8gb Class 10 30mbs card on the way. I will compare it to a class 6 in a K7 and see how it goes.

How long is "a while"?
I haven't noticed any delay as long as I stay at iso 1600 or lower.

Class 10 means (at least) 10MB/s, so if it is 10MB/s then a typical raw file will take about 2 seconds to write.

I think the K5 has a write speed of about 20MB/s so anything slower then that will slow down the camera.

Any processing like Noise Reduction is going to slow it down. And i have lens correction on at the moment as well. I'm bad :-)

Indeed a number of factors are at play.
Highlight correction, high ISO NR, slow shutter speed NR and lens correction are all each culprits of image review delay.
I too would rather the slight delay but keep the lens correction on particularly if I've got the 18-55 mounted...
SanDisk Extremes are excellent storage cards and are faster than most if not all cameras' write speed. That should not be your limiting factor.
