Pentax has made significant upgrades, but one problem is immediately apparent. It was very easy to switch cards on the k20, but the access to the card on the k5 is cramped which makes it difficult to remove them since they tend to stick some. Now I wish it had a second slot …

I barely ever remove my card. I end up just using the AV cord and importing the pics that way, may not be the fastest, but I've chipped and broken SD cards on other camera's with tight fits, so I just go make a cup of coffee while it's loading. Or start doing PP work on an older shot on the to do list.

If you're adventuresome you can lightly apply an emery board to the side edges of the SD card. Wipe it well to remove the dust. It seems like some cards are just a smidge too big for the slot. The problem is exacerbated by the slot being closer to the hinge on the K-5 than the K20D, making it harder to get a grip on the card.

Or you can use the spring to flick it out of the camera slightly.

The card slot was retrograde from the K20D in a couple of ways.

I'm not too worried about it, I only would remove my 16GB card if it was full and I needed to throw in my 8GB.. But I haven't had that issue yet, as long as my wife doesn't get shooting videos I think we'll be OK!

I just use my finger nail to push the card all the way in and then let the nail slide off the card. The card will pop out and stop with about half of the card remaining in the slot. Then I just grab it and pull it out without effort.

Using the same procedure on other cameras would probably launch the card flying across the room.

I have found the perfect solution! It can be hung from a tree or a shop rafter, a balcony rail, or held by a fat lady while you have the K5 held firmly in a vise or by several bystanders. Works like a charm!

I think Pentax should offer this accessory in black and silver with a nice Pentax shoulder strap for easy carrying?

With the K5 being 99.99999% excellent, this is the only thing I have left to complain about.

I dont know what all this fuss is about, i remember people said that the K-7 card was hard to remove as well?
I dont have any trouble pulling the card out my K-5, its just as easy as my k200d.

Me too - it always comes out without any problems. For those who have difficulty, perhaps it is due to small card size variations between makes (I use SanDisk and RAW 16GB cards), hence the reports that gentle filing down the card sides might help.

Comparing the mechanism to the K20D and K10D, it's certainly stiffer and less easy to remove.
Not a big deal though - it's not a major chore.

Getting a grip on the card is a bit of a bother: the space between the card partly ejected and the weatherproof cover is about half the width of my finger.
The card needs to be gripped pretty firmly to be removed, but some posters have reported that the firmness diminishes with time - I'm looking forward to that!
I do like to remove the card and use a card reader for transferring files to the PC. I am wary about connecting my camera directly to a PC.

Another K5 owner showed me the trick...just push the card in with you index finger and then let off quickly and it will spring out where you can grab it with ease. Now that I have that fancy puller, I feel like an idiot. Also, it was my only complaint about my K5, now I have nothing left to complain about.....kind of sad, isn't it?
