How to use old manual 500mm lens?

I have an old manual 500mm lens that I used to use back in the day on my K1000 35mm.

I wouldn't have the need very often, but I'd like to use its extreme telephoto capability on occasion with my K-5 (750mm equivalent). The aperture on this lens can be opened up for brighter focusing and then stopped down at will to tighter apertures.

I know there's a procedure for using these old lenses and getting the correct exposure. I'm thinking use the manual setting, focus wide open, then stop down and press the green button? Assuming tripod use, of course.

What's the solution for proper exposures with the K-5?

Thanks!

John

I think it is a lens with no contact with the camera? So you have to set in your menu number 27 to alow lenses without A-site.

The exposure messuring is very good with K-5, even if you set the aperture to the number you want to use.

Wich lens do you have?

I have an old Vivitar 500mm I bought early last winter, I tested it a bit with the K-10 but am going to try it on the K-5 soon. I had to replace the T-mount with a K-mount which was an interesting experience...

I think the K-5 metering and low-light abilities, with shake-reduction should really help.
It's back to how I learned photography on an all-manual Minolta back in the 80s. My dad still has that camera and some really nice lenses he still needs to try on his Sony DSLR...

This is for older cameras, but the principles are the same:
